✧ The expedition of the latter Badr, in Shaʿbān of the year four. [The Messenger's departure] Ibn Isḥāq said: Then he departed in Shaʿbān for Badr, for the appointment with Abū Sufyān, until he alighted there. [His appointing Ibn Ubayy over al-Madīnah] Ibn Hishām said: He appointed over al-Madīnah ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy b. Salūl al-Anṣārī. [Abū Sufyān's return with his men in the expedition of Badr of the appointment] Ibn Isḥāq said: He remained there for eight nights, waiting for Abū Sufyān. Abū Sufyān departed with the people of Makkah until he alighted at Majannah, on the side of al-Ẓahrān; some people say he reached ʿUsfān. Then it occurred to him to return, and he said: O assembly of Quraysh, nothing will benefit you except a fertile year in which you pasture on trees and drink milk. This year of yours is a year of drought, and I am returning, so return. The people returned. The people of Makkah called them the army of al-sawīq, saying: You only went out to drink al-sawīq.

✧ [The Messenger and Makhshī al-Ḍamrī] The Messenger of God ﷺ remained at Badr waiting for Abū Sufyān according to his appointment. Makhshī b. ʿAmr al-Ḍamrī came to him—he was the one with whom he had made a treaty on behalf of Banū Ḍamrah during the expedition of Waddān—and said, "O Muḥammad, have you come to meet Quraysh at this water?" He said, "Yes, O brother of Banū Ḍamrah, and if you wish, along with that, we will return to you what was between us and you, then we will fight you until God judges between us and you." He said, "No, by God, O Muḥammad, we have no need of that from you."

✧ [Maʿbad and his poetry about a she-camel of the Messenger that plunged forward] Then the Messenger of God ﷺ remained waiting for Abū Sufyān during the expedition of the appointed Badr, when Maʿbad b. Abī Maʿbad al-Khuzāʿī passed by him. He said, having seen the place of the Messenger of God ﷺ and his she-camel plunging forward with him: "She has shied away from my two companions, from Muḥammad's party, and from a pressed date from Yathrib like the ʿanjad fruit. She plunges forward upon the religion of her ancient father. She has made the water of Qudayd my appointed time, and the water of Ḍajnān hers on the forenoon of the morrow."

✧ [Poetry by Ibn Rawāḥah or Kaʿb concerning Badr] He said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah said concerning that—Ibn Hishām said: Abū Zayd al-Anṣārī recited it to me as by Kaʿb b. Mālik: We promised Abū Sufyān a Badr, but we found no truth in his appointment, and he was not faithful. I swear, had you kept the appointment with us and met us, you would have returned blamed and lost the clients. We left there the severed limbs of ʿUtbah and his son, and ʿAmr, Abū Jahl—we left him lying low. You disobeyed the Messenger of God—fie upon your religion and your evil affair that was misguided. For I, even if you reproach me, will say: May my family and wealth be ransom for the Messenger of God. We obeyed him and did not consider anyone else among us equal to him— a blazing star for us in the darkness of night, a guide.

✧ [THE POETRY OF HASSĀN ON BADR] And Hassān b. Thābit (may God be pleased with him) said about that: Abandon the Falujāt of Syria; the pathways have been barred before her by warriors like the muzzles of camels heavy with young, in the hands of men who emigrated toward their Lord and His true helpers, and in the hands of the angels. If you travel toward the lowlands from the hollow of ʿĀlij, then say to her: the path is not there. We remained at al-Rass al-Nazūʿ for eight [nights] with a mighty host, trailing and wide of resting places, with every deep bay whose middle is half of its body, and with lean, tall ones with high withers. You see the common ʿarfaj whose roots the hooves of the swift camels scatter. If we encounter in our roaming and seeking Furāt b. Ḥayyān, he will be a pledge to death. And if we meet Qays b. Imriʾ al-Qays after him, his color will add to blackness, a color like deep darkness. So convey from me to Abū Sufyān a message, for you are among the noble destitute men.

✧ [The poetry of Abū Sufyān in reply to Ḥassān concerning the expedition of Badr al-Mawʿid] Abū Sufyān b. al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib answered him, saying: "O Ḥassān, we—O son of an eater of faghā—and your ancestor, waylay the untrodden tracts in such a way. We went forth, and the gazelles do not escape between us, even if they take refuge from us in a swift, overtaking run. When we set out from a halting-place, you would deem it the habitual haunt of the people of the clamorous fair. You stayed at the distant well seeking us, and you leave us among the palm-trees by the presses. Our horses and our camels walk upon the sown fields, and what they have trodden they have made cleave to the level hillocks. We stayed three nights between Salʿ and Fāriʿ with short-haired, noble steeds and the ambling riding-camels. You reckoned the people's fighting at their tents to be like your seizing at the spring, ratls of lead. So do not send forth the noble horses, but say to them something like the saying of one who withholds and holds fast. You were made fortunate by it, while others were its people—horsemen from the sons of Fihr b. Mālik. Indeed you are neither in the Hijrah, if you mention it, nor in the sacred ordinances of the religion—you are not a devotee." Ibn Hishām said: "Some verses remain from it which we have omitted because of the ugliness of the variation in their rhymes." Abū Zayd al-Anṣārī recited to me this verse: "We went forth, and the gazelles do not escape between us," and the verse that follows it, as belonging to Ḥassān b. Thābit in his saying: "Leave the watering-places of Syria, since there has come between them," and he recited to me for him, in it, his verse: "So convey to Abū Sufyān."
