Translation

✧ [The poetry of Abū Sufyān in reply to Ḥassān concerning the expedition of Badr al-Mawʿid] Abū Sufyān b. al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib answered him, saying: "O Ḥassān, we—O son of an eater of faghā—and your ancestor, waylay the untrodden tracts in such a way. We went forth, and the gazelles do not escape between us, even if they take refuge from us in a swift, overtaking run. When we set out from a halting-place, you would deem it the habitual haunt of the people of the clamorous fair. You stayed at the distant well seeking us, and you leave us among the palm-trees by the presses. Our horses and our camels walk upon the sown fields, and what they have trodden they have made cleave to the level hillocks. We stayed three nights between Salʿ and Fāriʿ with short-haired, noble steeds and the ambling riding-camels. You reckoned the people's fighting at their tents to be like your seizing at the spring, ratls of lead. So do not send forth the noble horses, but say to them something like the saying of one who withholds and holds fast. You were made fortunate by it, while others were its people—horsemen from the sons of Fihr b. Mālik. Indeed you are neither in the Hijrah, if you mention it, nor in the sacred ordinances of the religion—you are not a devotee." Ibn Hishām said: "Some verses remain from it which we have omitted because of the ugliness of the variation in their rhymes." Abū Zayd al-Anṣārī recited to me this verse: "We went forth, and the gazelles do not escape between us," and the verse that follows it, as belonging to Ḥassān b. Thābit in his saying: "Leave the watering-places of Syria, since there has come between them," and he recited to me for him, in it, his verse: "So convey to Abū Sufyān."
