✧ The Expedition of Dhāt al-Riqāʿ in the Year Four [Preparation for It] Ibn Isḥāq said: Then the Messenger of God ﷺ remained in Madinah after the expedition against Banū al-Naḍīr for the month of Rabīʿ al-Ākhir and part of Jumādā. Then he raided Najd, intending Banū Muḥārib and Banū Thaʿlabah of Ghaṭafān. He appointed Abū Dharr al-Ghifārī over Madinah—though it is said: ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān—according to what Ibn Hishām said.

✧ [The reason for naming it Dhat al-Riqaʿ] Ibn Ishaq said:... until he halted at Nakhl, and that is the expedition of Dhat al-Riqaʿ. Ibn Hisham said: It was only called the expedition of Dhat al-Riqaʿ because they patched their banners during it; and it is said: Dhat al-Riqaʿ is a tree at that place, called Dhat al-Riqaʿ. Ibn Ishaq said: He encountered there a great gathering of Ghatafan, and the people drew near to one another, and there was no war between them, and the people feared one another, until the Messenger of God ﷺ prayed with the people the prayer of fear, then he departed with the people.

✧ [The Fear Prayer] Ibn Hishām said: ʿAbd al-Wārith b. Saʿīd al-Tannūrī—who was given the kunyah Abū ʿUbaydah—related to us, saying: Yūnus b. ʿUbayd related to us, from al-Ḥasan b. Abī al-Ḥasan, from Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh, concerning the fear prayer. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ prayed two rakʿahs with one group, then said the salām, while another group was facing the enemy. He said: Then they came, and he prayed two more rakʿahs with them, then said the salām. Ibn Hishām said: ʿAbd al-Wārith related to us, saying: Ayyūb related to us, from Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir, who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ arranged us in two rows. He bowed with all of us together. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ prostrated, and the first row prostrated. When they raised their heads, those next to them prostrated by themselves. Then the first row moved back and the second row moved forward until they stood in their place. Then the Prophet ﷺ bowed with all of them together. Then the Prophet ﷺ prostrated, and those next to him prostrated with him. When they raised their heads, the others prostrated by themselves. Thus the Prophet ﷺ bowed with all of them together, and each of the two [groups] prostrated by themselves two prostrations. Ibn Hishām said: ʿAbd al-Wārith b. Saʿīd al-Tannūrī related to us, saying: Ayyūb related to us, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said: The imam stands, and with him stands one group, while another group is facing their enemy. The imam bows with them and prostrates with them. Then they move back and take their place facing the enemy, and the others come forward. The imam bows with them one rakʿah and prostrates with them. Then each group prays one rakʿah by themselves. Thus they had one rakʿah with the imam and prayed one rakʿah by themselves.

✧ [Ghawrath and what he intended of killing the Messenger] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAmr b. ʿUbayd narrated to me, from al-Ḥasan, from Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh, that a man of Banū Muḥārib, called Ghawrath, said to his people of Ghaṭafān and Muḥārib: “Shall I not kill Muḥammad for you?” They said, “Yes, and how will you kill him?” He said, “I will assassinate him.” He said: So he came to the Messenger of God ﷺ while he was sitting, with the sword of the Messenger of God ﷺ in his lap, and said: “O Muḥammad, may I look at this sword of yours?” He said: “Yes.”—It was ornamented with silver, according to what Ibn Hishām said.—He said: So he took it and drew it, then he began to shake it and intend [to strike], but God restrained him. Then he said: “O Muḥammad, do you not fear me?” He said: “No, and what should I fear from you?” He said: “Do you not fear me when the sword is in my hand?” He said: “No, God protects me from you.” Then he turned to the sword of the Messenger of God ﷺ and returned it to him. He said: God revealed: “O you who believe, remember God's favour upon you when a people intended to stretch out their hands against you, but He restrained their hands from you. And fear God, and upon God let the believers rely” (Q 5:11). Ibn Isḥāq said: Yazīd b. Rūmān narrated to me that it was revealed only concerning ʿAmr b. Jiḥāsh, the brother of Banū al-Naḍīr, and what he intended; but God knows best which of these it was.

✧ [Jabir and his story with his camel and the Messenger] Ibn Ishaq said: Wahb b. Kaysan narrated to me, from Jabir b. ʿAbd Allah, who said: I set out with the Messenger of God ﷺ to the expedition of Dhat al-Riqaʿ from Nakhl, on a weak camel of mine. When the Messenger of God ﷺ returned, the parties began to move on, and I began to lag behind, until the Messenger of God ﷺ caught up with me. He said, 'What is the matter with you, O Jabir?' I said, 'O Messenger of God, my camel has slowed me down.' He said, 'Make it kneel.' So I made it kneel, and the Messenger of God ﷺ made his mount kneel. Then he said, 'Give me this stick from your hand, or cut me a stick from a tree.' So I did. He said: Then the Messenger of God ﷺ took it and prodded it with the stick several times. Then he said, 'Mount.' So I mounted, and it set off, by the One who sent him with the truth, keeping pace with his she-camel in a vigorous manner. He said: And I conversed with the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he said to me, 'Will you sell me this camel of yours, O Jabir?' I said, 'O Messenger of God, rather I give it to you as a gift.' He said, 'No, but sell it to me.' I said, 'Then name me a price, O Messenger of God.' He said, 'I have taken it for a dirham.' I said, 'No, then you would be cheating me, O Messenger of God.' He said, 'Then for two dirhams.' I said, 'No.' He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ kept raising the price for me until it reached an uqiyyah. I said, 'Are you satisfied now, O Messenger of God?' He said, 'Yes.' I said, 'Then it is yours.' He said, 'I have taken it.' He said: Then he said, 'O Jabir, have you married?' I said, 'Yes, O Messenger of God.' He said, 'A previously married woman or a virgin?' I said, 'No, rather a previously married woman.' He said, 'Why not a young girl, so that you could play with her and she could play with you?' I said, 'O Messenger of God, my father was struck down on the day of Uhud and left seven daughters of his. So I married a capable woman who gathers their heads and takes care of them.' He said, 'You have done right, if God wills. Indeed, when we come to Sirar, we will order a camel to be slaughtered, and we will stay over it that day, and she will hear of us and will shake out her cushions.' I said, 'By God, O Messenger of God, we have no cushions.' He said, 'There will be. So when you arrive, act with diligence.' He said: When we came to Sirar, the Messenger of God ﷺ ordered a camel to be slaughtered, and we stayed over it that day. When evening came, the Messenger of God ﷺ entered, and we entered. He said: Then I related the conversation to the woman, and what the Messenger of God ﷺ had said to me. She said, 'Here you are: hearing and obedience.' He said: When morning came, I took the head of the camel and brought it until I made it kneel at the door of the Messenger of God ﷺ. He said: Then I sat in the mosque near him. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ came out and saw the camel. He said, 'What is this?' They said, 'O Messenger of God, this is a camel that Jabir brought.' He said, 'Where is Jabir?' He said: I was summoned to him. He said, 'O son of my brother, take the head of your camel, for it is yours.' And he called Bilal and said to him, 'Go with Jabir and give him an uqiyyah.' He said: I went with him, and he gave me an uqiyyah and added a small amount. He said: By God, it kept increasing with me, and I saw its place in our house, until it was struck down yesterday in what was struck down of ours, meaning on the day of al-Harrah.

✧ [Ibn Yāsir and Ibn Bishr, and their standing guard over the Messenger's army, and what befell them] Ibn Isḥāq said: My uncle Ṣadaqah b. Yasār narrated to me, from ʿAqīl b. Jābir, from Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Anṣārī, who said: We went out with the Messenger of God ﷺ on the expedition of Dhāt al-Riqāʿ from Nakhl. A man had sexual intercourse with the wife of a man from the polytheists. When the Messenger of God ﷺ turned back, returning, her husband came, for he had been absent. When he was told the news, he swore he would not stop until he shed blood among the companions of Muḥammad ﷺ. He went out following the trail of the Messenger of God ﷺ. The Messenger of God ﷺ halted at a stopping place and said, "Who is a man who will guard us this night of ours?" He said: A man from the Emigrants and another man from the Anṣār volunteered, and they said, "We will, O Messenger of God." He said, "Then be at the mouth of the mountain pass." He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ and his companions had halted at a pass of the valley, and they were ʿAmmār b. Yāsir and ʿAbbād b. Bishr, according to what Ibn Hishām said. Ibn Isḥāq said: When the two men went out to the mouth of the pass, the Anṣārī said to the Emigrant, "Which part of the night do you prefer that I suffice you: its beginning or its end?" He said, "Rather, suffice me its beginning." He said: So the Emigrant lay down and slept, and the Anṣārī stood up to pray. He said: The man came, and when he saw the figure of the man, he knew that he was the watchman of the people. He said: So he shot an arrow and placed it in him. He said: He pulled it out and placed it aside, and remained standing. He said: Then he shot another arrow at him and placed it in him. He said: He pulled it out and placed it aside, and remained standing. Then he returned to him with a third, and placed it in him. He said: He pulled it out and placed it aside, then he bowed and prostrated. Then he roused his companion and said, "Sit up, for I have been wounded." He said: He jumped up, and when the man saw the two of them, he knew that they had become aware of him, so he fled. He said: When the Emigrant saw the blood on the Anṣārī, he said, "Glory be to God! Why did you not rouse me the first time he shot you?" He said, "I was in a sūrah which I was reciting, and I did not like to cut it off until I had completed it. When he continued shooting at me, I bowed and alerted you. And by God, if it were not that I would neglect a frontier which the Messenger of God ﷺ commanded me to guard, my breath would have been cut off before I cut it off or completed it."
