كُنَّا قُعُودًا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَذَكَرَ فِتْنَةً فَعَظَّمَهَا. قَالَ: فَقُلْنَا، أَوْ قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، لَئِنْ أَدْرَكْنَا هَذِهِ لَنَهْلِكَنَّ ؟ قَالَ: فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: كَلَّا، إِنَّ بِحَسْبِكُمُ الْقَتْلَ. قَالَ سَعِيدٌ: رَأَيْتُ إِخْوَانِي قُتِلُوا بَعْدُ
✧ We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he mentioned a tribulation and magnified it. He said, "So we said, or they said, 'O Messenger of Allah, if we live to see this, we will surely be destroyed?'" He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'No, for killing will be enough for you.'" Sa'id said, "I saw my brothers killed afterwards."

أَتَتْنَا أَرْوَى ابْنَةُ أَوْسٍ فِي نَفَرٍ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ، فِيهِمْ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ سَهْلٍ، فَقَالَتْ: إِنِّي أُحِبُّ أَنْ تَأْتُوا سَعِيدَ بْنَ زَيْدٍ فَتُكَلِّمُوهُ وَتُذَكِّرُوهُ، فَإِنَّهُ انْتَقَصَ مِنْ أَرْضِي إِلَى أَرْضِهِ. فَقُمْنَا إِلَى سَعِيدٍ حَتَّى جِئْنَاهُ فِي أَرْضِهِ بِالْعَقِيقِ، فَخَرَجَ إِلَيْنَا، فَقَالَ: قَدْ عَرَفْتُ مَا جَاءَ بِكُمْ. أَتَتْكُمْ أَرْوَى بِنْتُ أَوْسٍ، فَقَالَتْ: إِنِّي أَنْتَقِصُ مِنْ أَرْضِهَا إِلَى أَرْضِي مَا لَيْسَ لِي، سَأُحَدِّثُكُمْ مَا سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: مَنْ أَخَذَ مِنَ الْأَرْضِ مَا لَيْسَ لَهُ طُوِّقَهُ إِلَى السَّابِعَةِ
✧ Arwa bt. Aws came to us in a group of Quraysh, among them 'Abd al-Rahman b. Sahl, and said: I would like you to go to Sa'id b. Zayd and speak with him and remind him, for he has taken away from my land into his land. So we went to Sa'id until we came to him on his land at al-'Aqiq. He came out to us and said: I know what brings you. Arwa bt. Aws came to you and said that I am taking from her land into my land what is not mine. I will tell you what I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: Whoever takes from the earth what is not his will be made to wear it as a collar down to the seventh earth.

أَنَّ أَرْوَى خَاصَمَتْهُ فِي أَرْضٍ، فَقَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: مَنْ أَخَذَ شِبْرًا مِنَ الْأَرْضِ بِغَيْرِ حَقِّهِ طُوِّقَهُ مِنْ سَبْعِ أَرَضِينَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ. ثُمَّ قَالَ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كَانَتْ كَاذِبَةً فَأَعْمِ بَصَرَهَا وَاجْعَلْ قَبْرَهَا فِي دَارِهَا. قَالَ: فَرَأَيْتُهَا عَمْيَاءَ تَلْتَمِسُ الْجُدُرَ، تَقُولُ: أَصَابَتْنِي دَعْوَةُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ، فَبَيْنَمَا هِيَ تَمْشِي فِي الدَّارِ خَرَّتْ فِي بِئْرٍ فِي الدَّارِ فَوَقَعَتْ فِيهَا فَكَانَتْ قَبْرَهَا
✧ Arwa disputed with him concerning a piece of land, so he said: I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: Whoever takes a handspan of land without his right will be made to wear it as a collar from seven earths on the Day of Resurrection. Then he said: O God, if she is lying, then blind her sight and make her grave in her own house. He said: I saw her blind, feeling for the walls, saying: The supplication of Sa'id b. Zayd has struck me. Then while she was walking in the house, she fell into a well in the house and fell into it, and it became her grave.

✧ Go and reconcile between these two: Sa'id and Arwa. So we came to Sa'id b. Zayd and he said: Do you think I have taken anything from her right? I testify that I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: Whoever takes a handspan of land without his right will be made to wear it as a collar from seven earths, and whoever allies himself with a people without their permission, upon him is the curse of God, and whoever cuts off the property of his brother with his oath, may God not bless it for him.

أَنَّ أَرْوَى بِنْتَ أَوْسٍ ادَّعَتْ عَلَى سَعِيدِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ أَنَّهُ أَخَذَ شَيْئًا مِنْ أَرْضِهَا، فَخَاصَمَتْهُ إِلَى مَرْوَانَ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ، فَقَالَ سَعِيدٌ: أَنَا كُنْتُ آخُذُ مِنْ أَرْضِهَا شَيْئًا بَعْدَ الَّذِي سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ ؟ قَالَ: وَمَاذَا سَمِعْتَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ ؟ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: مَنْ أَخَذَ شِبْرًا مِنَ الْأَرْضِ طُوِّقَهُ إِلَى سَبْعِ أَرَضِينَ. فَقَالَ لَهُ مَرْوَانُ: لَا أَسْأَلُكَ بَيِّنَةً بَعْدَ هَذَا. فَقَالَ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كَانَتْ كَاذِبَةً فَأَعْمِ بَصَرَهَا، وَاقْتُلْهَا فِي أَرْضِهَا. قَالَ: فَمَا مَاتَتْ حَتَّى ذَهَبَ بَصَرُهَا، وَبَيْنَمَا هِيَ تَمْشِي فِي أَرْضِهَا إِذْ وَقَعَتْ فِي حُفْرَةٍ فَمَاتَتْ
✧ That Arwa bt. Aws claimed against Sa'id b. Zayd that he had taken something from her land, and she brought a dispute against him to Marwan b. al-Hakam. Sa'id said: Would I take anything from her land after what I heard from the Messenger of God ﷺ? He said: And what did you hear from the Messenger of God ﷺ? He said: I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: Whoever takes a span of land will be made to wear it as a collar down to seven earths. Marwan said to him: I will not ask you for proof after this. He said: O God, if she is lying, blind her sight and kill her in her land. He said: She did not die until her sight went, and while she was walking in her land she fell into a pit and died.

كُنَّا عِنْدَ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ شُعْبَةَ وَهُوَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ وَعِنْدَهُ أَهْلُ الْكُوفَةِ، فَجَاءَ سَعِيدُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ فَأَوْسَعَ لَهُ الْمُغِيرَةُ، فَقَالَ: هَاهُنَا فَاجْلِسْ، فَأَجْلَسَهُ مَعَهُ عَلَى السَّرِيرِ. فَقَالَ سَعِيدُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: إِنَّ كَذِبًا عَلَيَّ لَيْسَ كَكَذِبٍ عَلَى أَحَدٍ، مَنْ كَذَبَ عَلَيَّ مُتَعَمِّدًا فَلْيَتَبَوَّأْ مَقْعَدَهُ مِنَ النَّارِ
✧ We were with al-Mughira b. Shu'ba while he was in the mosque and with him were the people of Kufa. Sa'id b. Zayd came, and al-Mughira made room for him, and said: Here, sit. So he seated him with him on the bed. Sa'id b. Zayd said: I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: Lying about me is not like lying about anyone else. Whoever deliberately lies about me, let him take his seat in the Fire.

✧ I bear witness for the nine that they are in Paradise, and if I were to bear witness for the tenth, I would not be sinning. He said: It was said: How is that? He said: We were with the Messenger of God ﷺ on Hira, and he said: Be still, Hira, for there is upon you only a prophet, or a truthful one, or a martyr. He said: It was said: Who are they? He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ, and Abu Bakr, and Umar, and Ali, and Uthman, and Talha, and al-Zubayr, and Sa'd, and Ibn Awf. He said: It was said: Who is the tenth? He said: I am. Meaning himself.

اخْتَبَأْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَوْقَ حِرَاءٍ، فَلَمَّا اسْتَوَيْنَا رَجَفَ بِنَا، فَضَرَبَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِكَفِّهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ: اسْكُنْ حِرَاءُ، فَإِنَّهُ لَيْسَ عَلَيْكَ إِلَّا نَبِيٌّ، أَوْ صِدِّيقٌ، أَوْ شَهِيدٌ. وَعَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ، وَعُمَرُ، وَعُثْمَانُ، وَعَلِيٌّ، وَطَلْحَةُ، وَالزُّبَيْرُ، وَسَعْدٌ، وَعَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ، وَسَعِيدُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ
✧ We hid with the Messenger of God ﷺ on top of Hira, and when we settled, it shook with us. The Messenger of God ﷺ struck it with his palm, then said: Be still, Hira, for there is upon you only a prophet, or a truthful one, or a martyr. And upon it were the Messenger of God ﷺ, and Abu Bakr, and Umar, and Uthman, and Ali, and Talha, and al-Zubayr, and Sa'd, and Abd al-Rahman, and Sa'id b. Zayd.

✧ Al-Mughira b. Shu'ba addressed us and disparaged Ali. Sa'id b. Zayd stood up and said: "I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: The Prophet is in Paradise, and Abu Bakr is in Paradise, and Umar is in Paradise, and Uthman is in Paradise, and Ali is in Paradise, and Talha is in Paradise, and al-Zubayr is in Paradise, and Abd al-Rahman b. Awf is in Paradise, and Sa'd is in Paradise, and if I wished, I would name the tenth."

✧ I and Umar b. al-Khattab asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about Zayd b. Amr, and he said: He will come on the Day of Resurrection as a nation by himself.
