✧ Abu Lu'lu'ah was a slave of al-Mughirah b. Shu'bah. He used to make millstones, and al-Mughirah used to take from him four dirhams every day. Abu Lu'lu'ah met 'Umar and said: "O Commander of the Faithful, al-Mughirah has made my payment heavy on me. Speak to him to lighten it for me." 'Umar said to him: "Fear God and be good to your master." 'Umar intended to meet al-Mughirah and speak to him to lighten it. The slave became angry and said: "His justice has encompassed all the people except me." He resolved to kill him. He made a dagger with two heads, sharpened it, and poisoned it. Then he brought it to al-Hurmuzan and said: "What do you think of this?" He said: "I think that you would not strike anyone with this except that you would kill him." Abu Lu'lu'ah waited for the opportunity and came at the dawn prayer until he stood behind 'Umar. When the prayer was called, 'Umar would speak, saying: "Straighten your rows," as he used to say. When he said the takbir, Abu Lu'lu'ah stabbed him in his shoulder and stabbed him in his side. 'Umar fell, and he stabbed thirteen men with his dagger. Seven of them died and six recovered. 'Umar was taken to his home. The people shouted until the sun almost rose. 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf called out: "O people, the prayer, the prayer, the prayer." They rushed to prayer. 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf came forward and led them with the two shortest surahs of the Qur'an. When he finished the prayer, they went to 'Umar. He called for a drink to see the extent of his wound. Nabidh was brought and he drank it; it came out from his wound, and he did not know whether it was nabidh or blood. He called for milk and drank it; it came out from his wound. They said: "No harm upon you, O Commander of the Faithful." He said: "If there is harm in being killed, then I have been killed." The people began praising him, saying: "May God reward you well, O Commander of the Faithful. You did such and such." Then they would leave, and another group would come and praise him. 'Umar said: "By God, despite what you say, I wish that I had left it even, with nothing against me or for me, and that the companionship of the Messenger of God ﷺ is safe for me." 'Abd Allah b. 'Abbas spoke, and he was by his head. He was his close associate, as if he were from his family. Ibn 'Abbas used to recite the Qur'an. 'Abd Allah b. 'Abbas spoke and said: "By God, you will not leave it even. You accompanied the Messenger of God ﷺ and accompanied him in the best way a companion could. You were for him such and such, and such and such, until the Messenger of God ﷺ passed away while he was pleased with you. Then you accompanied the caliph of the Messenger of God ﷺ, then you took charge, O Commander of the Faithful. You took charge in the best way a ruler could: you did such and such, and such and such." 'Umar was comforted by Ibn 'Abbas's speech. 'Umar said: "O Ibn 'Abbas, repeat your speech for me." He repeated it. 'Umar said: "By God, despite what you say, if I had the fill of the earth of gold, I would ransom myself with it today from the terror of the place of rising. I have made it a consultation among six: 'Uthman, 'Ali, Talhah b. 'Ubayd Allah, al-Zubayr b. al-'Awwam, 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf, and Sa'd b. Abi Waqqas. He made 'Abd Allah b. 'Umar with them as an advisor, not one of them. He set a term of three days for them, and he ordered Suhayb to lead the people in prayer."
