✧ While the people were with Ali ؓ one day, they found him in good spirits. They said: 'Tell us about your companions, O Commander of the Faithful.' He said ؓ: 'Which of my companions?' They said: 'The companions of the Prophet ﷺ.' He said ؓ: 'All the companions of the Prophet ﷺ are my companions. Which of them do you want?' They said: 'The group whom we have seen you treat kindly in your mention and praise of them, apart from the rest.' He said ؓ: 'Which of them?' They said: 'Abdullah b. Mas'ud ؓ.' He said: 'He learned the Sunnah and recited the Quran, and that suffices as knowledge.' Then he ended with that, and they did not know what he meant by his saying 'that suffices as knowledge' – did it suffice for Abdullah, or did it suffice for the Quran? They said: 'What about Hudhayfah ؓ?' He said ؓ: 'He knew – or was taught – the names of the hypocrites, and he asked about difficult matters until he understood them. If you ask him about them, you will find him knowledgeable about them.' They said: 'What about Abu Dharr ؓ?' He said ؓ: 'A vessel filled with knowledge, and he was ؓ stingy and eager – stingy about his religion, eager for knowledge. He used to ask many questions, and he was given and denied. Indeed, it was filled for him in his vessel until it was full.' They said: 'What about Salman ؓ?' He said ؓ: 'A man from us and to us, the People of the House. Who among you can be like Luqman the Wise? He knew the first knowledge and attained the last knowledge, and he read the first Book and the last Book. He was ؓ a sea that never runs dry.' They said: 'What about Ammar b. Yasir ؓ?' He said ؓ: 'That is a man into whose flesh, blood, bones, hair, and skin Allah the Exalted mixed faith. He never leaves the truth for even an hour; wherever it goes, he goes with it. The Fire should not consume anything of him.' They said: 'Then tell us about yourself, O Commander of the Faithful.' He said ؓ: 'Hold on, Allah has forbidden self-praise.' He said: Then someone said: 'But Allah the Exalted says: And as for the favor of your Lord, proclaim it.' He said ؓ: 'Then I will tell you of the favor of my Lord, Blessed and Exalted: When I asked, I was given; when I was silent, I was approached. And within my faculties, I was filled with abundant knowledge.'
