✧ I arrived in Madinah and met a man from the Ansar. I said: Narrate to me the hadith of Thabit b. Qays b. Shammas. He said: Yes, come with me. I went with him until he brought me to the door of a house, seated me at its door, then entered. He remained for a long while, then called us and brought us in to a woman. He said: This is the daughter of Thabit b. Qays b. Shammas ؓ. Ask her whatever seems right to you. I said: Narrate to me about him, may Allah have mercy on you. She said: When Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: 'O you who believe, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet' (49:2), he entered his house, shut his door, and began to weep. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ missed him and said: What is the matter with Thabit? They said: O Messenger of Allah, we do not know what is the matter with him, except that he has shut his door and is weeping inside. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called him and asked him: What is the matter with you? He said: O Messenger of Allah, this verse was revealed to you: 'O you who believe, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet,' and I have a loud voice, and I fear that my deeds have become worthless. He ﷺ said: You are not one of them; rather you will live well and die well. She said: Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed to His Messenger ﷺ: 'Indeed, Allah does not love every arrogant boaster' (31:18). He shut his door and began to weep. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ missed him and said: Thabit, what is the matter with him? They said: O Messenger of Allah, we do not know except that he has shut his door. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent for him and said: What is the matter with you? He said: O Messenger of Allah, it was revealed to you: 'Indeed, Allah does not love every arrogant boaster,' and by Allah, I love beauty and I love to be a leader of my people. He ﷺ said: You are not one of them; rather you will live praiseworthy, be killed as a martyr, and enter Paradise. Then on the day of al-Yamama, he went out with Khalid b. al-Walid ؓ against Musaylima the liar.
