✧ Jacob ﷺ had a brotherly friend. One day he said to him: 'O Jacob, what took away your sight? What bent your back?' He said: 'As for what took away my sight, it was weeping over Joseph. As for what bent my back, it was grief over my son Benjamin.' Then Gabriel ﷺ came to him and said: 'O Jacob, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, sends you greetings of peace, and says to you: Are you not ashamed to complain of Me to other than Me?' Jacob said: 'I only complain of my anguish and grief to Allah.' Gabriel said: 'Allah knows best what you complain of, O Jacob.' Then Jacob ﷺ said: 'O Lord, will You not have mercy on an old man? You have taken away my sight and bent my back. Return to me my fragrant one, Joseph, that I may smell him one whiff before death. Then do with me, O Lord, what You will.' Then Gabriel ﷺ came to him and said: 'O Jacob, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, sends you greetings of peace, and says to you: Rejoice, and let your heart be glad. By My might and majesty, even if they were dead, I would raise them up for you. Make food for the poor, for the dearest of My servants to Me are the poor. Do you know why I took away your sight and bent your back, and why Joseph's brothers did what they did to Joseph? Because you slaughtered a sheep, and a certain poor man came to you while fasting, and you did not feed him from it.' After that, whenever Jacob wanted to eat, he would order a caller to announce: 'Is there any poor person fasting? Let him break his fast with Jacob.'
