✧ Jacob the prophet ﷺ had a brother who was a close friend for the sake of God. One day he said, “O Jacob, what took away your sight, and what bent your back?” He said, “As for what took away my sight, it was weeping over Joseph. As for what bent my back, it was grief over my son Benjamin.” He said: Then Gabriel ﷺ came to him and said, “O Jacob, God sends you greetings and says to you: Are you not ashamed to complain of Me to other than Me?” He said: Jacob said, “I only complain of my anguish and grief to God.” He said: Gabriel said, “I know what you complain of, O Jacob.” He said: Then Jacob said, “My Lord, will You not have mercy on an old man? You have taken away my sight and bent my back. Return to me my fragrant flower so I may smell him once before death, then do with me as You will.” He said: Gabriel came to him and said, “God sends you greetings and says to you: Rejoice, and let your heart be glad. By My might, if they were both dead, I would raise them. Prepare food for the poor, for the most beloved of My servants to Me are the prophets and the poor. Do you know why I took away your sight and bent your back, and what Joseph’s brothers did to him? Because you slaughtered a sheep, and an orphan poor man who was fasting came to you, and you did not feed him anything from it.” He said: After that, whenever Jacob wanted lunch, he would order a caller to announce, “Whoever among the poor wants lunch, let him have lunch with Jacob.” And when he was fasting, he would order a caller to announce, “Whoever among the poor is fasting, let him break his fast with Jacob.”
