✧ Jacob ﷺ had a brother with whom he was bound in friendship. One day the brother said to him: "O Jacob, what took away your eyesight and what bent your back?" He said: "As for what took away my eyesight, it was weeping over Joseph. As for what bent my back, it was grief over Benjamin." Then Gabriel ﷺ came to him and said: "O Jacob, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, sends you greetings of peace and says to you: 'Are you not ashamed to complain of Me to someone other than Me?'" Jacob said: "I only complain of my anguish and grief to Allah." Gabriel said: "Allah knows best what you complain of, O Jacob." Then Jacob said: "O Lord, will You not have mercy on the old man? You took away my eyesight and bent my back. Return to me Joseph, my sweet basil, that I may smell him once before death. Then do with me, O Lord, as You will." Gabriel ﷺ came to him and said: "O Jacob, Allah sends you greetings of peace and says to you: 'Rejoice and let your heart be glad. By My might, if they were both dead I would resurrect them for you. Prepare food for the poor, for the most beloved of My servants to Me are the poor. Do you know why I took away your eyesight and bent your back, and why Joseph's brothers did what they did to him? Because you slaughtered a sheep, and a fasting poor man came to you, but you did not feed him any of it.'" After that, whenever Jacob's midday meal came, he would order a caller to proclaim: "Whoever among the poor wants the midday meal, let him eat with Jacob." And if he was fasting, he would order a caller to proclaim: "Whoever among the poor is fasting, let him break his fast with Jacob."
