✧ Censure of Arrogance and Praise of Humility

وَقَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى: حَدَّثَنَا الْمُقَدَّمِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا مُعْتَمِرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبَّادُ بْنُ عَبَّادِ بْنِ عَلْقَمَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي مِجْلَزٍ

أَنَّ أَصْحَابَ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ قَرَصَهُمُ الْبَرْدُ، فَجَعَلُوا يَسْتَحْيُونَ أَنْ يَجِيئُوا فِي الْعَشَاشِ وَالْعَبَاءِ، فَفَقَدَهُمْ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ: أَمْرُهُمْ كَذَا وَكَذَا، فَأَصْبَحَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ فِي عَبَاءَةٍ، فَقَالُوا: أَصْبَحَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ فِي عَبَاءَةٍ، ثُمَّ جَاءَ الْيَوْمُ الثَّانِي، ثُمَّ جَاءَ الْيَوْمُ الثَّالِثُ، فَلَمَّا رَأَوْهُ فِي الْعَبَاءَةِ، جَاؤُوا فِي أَكْسِيَتِهِمْ مَعًا، فَعَرَفَ وُجُوهًا قَدْ كَانَ فَقَدَهَا، فَقَالَ: إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: « لَا يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ أَحَدٌ فِي قَلْبِهِ مِثْقَالُ خَرْدَلَةٍ مِنْ كِبْرٍ، أَوْ قَالَ: ذَرَّةٍ مِنْ كِبْرٍ

Translation

✧ The companions of Ibn Masʿud were bitten by the cold, and they began to feel ashamed to come in worn-out cloaks and woolen wraps. He missed them, and it was said to him: "Their situation is such and such." So Abu ʿAbd al-Rahman came one morning in a woolen wrap, and they said: "Ibn Masʿud has come in a woolen wrap." Then the second day came, then the third day came. When they saw him in the woolen wrap, they came in their cloaks all together. He recognized faces that he had missed and said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: «No one will enter Paradise who has in his heart the weight of a mustard seed of pride,» or he said: «an atom of pride.»
