✧ I was with Utbah b. Farqad in Azerbaijan. He sent Suhaym and another to Umar ؓ on three mounts with two baskets, and he put in them khabis, and put over them leather covers, and over the leather covers felt. When they arrived in Madinah, it was said: "Suhaym, the freedman of Utbah, and another have come on three mounts." He gave them permission and they entered. Umar ؓ asked them: "Gold or silver?" They said: "No." He said: "What have you brought?" They said: "Food." He said: "Food of two men on three mounts! Bring what you have brought." It was brought, and he uncovered the felt and the leather. Umar came and put his hand in it and found it soft. He said ؓ: "Will all the emigrants be satiated from this?" He said: "No, but this is something reserved for the Commander of the Faithful." He said: "O so-and-so, bring the inkwell. Write: From the servant of God, Commander of the Faithful, to Utbah b. Farqad and those with him of the Muslims. Peace be upon you. To proceed: I praise to you God, besides whom there is no deity. To proceed: It is not from your earnings nor your father's earnings nor your mother's earnings, O Utbah b. Farqad." Then he mentioned the hadith. He said: "And in Umar's ؓ letter: 'Cut the saddles, and leap onto the horses with a leap.'" Abu Uthman said: "I saw the old man leap and fall on his belly, and leap and fall on his belly, then after that I saw him leap as a boy leaps."
