ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb wrote to Abū Mūsā: "To proceed: wear the lower garment (izār) and the upper wrap (ridāʾ), and cast off trousers, and cast off leather socks. Go barefoot, and wear sandals, and alternate between the two. Be rough and live a hard life, and wear worn-out clothes, and live as the Maʿadd (tribe) lived, for you are Maʿadd. Shoot at targets, and cut short the stirrups, and leap onto the backs of horses with a leap, and face the sun with your faces, for it is the bathhouse of the Arabs. Beware of the dress of the non-Arabs and their luxury, and keep to the clothing of your father Ismāʿīl."
