51. ✧ Mu'awiyah b. Abi Sufyan, may Allah have mercy on him

   ✧ The Prophet ﷺ passed away when he was sixty-three, Abu Bakr ؓ when he was sixty-three, and Umar ؓ when he was sixty-three.

   كَانَ مُعَاوِيَةُ قَلَّمَا يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَكَانَ لَهُ فِي الْجُمَعِ كَلَامٌ يَتَكَلَّمُ بِهِ يَرْوِيهِ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ، فَقَالَ: مَنْ يُرِدِ اللهُ بِهِ خَيْرًا يُفَقِّهْهُ فِي الدِّينِ، وَإِنَّ هَذَا الْمَالَ خَضِرٌ حُلْوٌ، فَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِحَقِّهِ بُورِكَ لَهُ فِيهِ، وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَالتَّمَادُحَ فَإِنَّ التَّمَادُحَ فِيهِ الذَّبْحُ

   ✧ Mu'awiyah seldom narrated from the Messenger of God ﷺ, but he had a speech on Fridays that he would deliver, reporting it from the Prophet ﷺ. He said: 'Whomever God intends good for, He gives him understanding in religion. This wealth is green and sweet, so whoever takes it with its due right is blessed in it. Beware of mutual praise, for mutual praise is slaughter.'

   كُنَّا عَلَى بَابِ مُعَاوِيَةَ، فَخَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا فَقَالَ: فِيمَ كُنْتُمْ ؟ قُلْنَا: كُنَّا فِي الْأَنْصَارِ وَأَحَادِيثِهِمْ. فَقَالَ مُعَاوِيَةُ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: مَنْ أَحَبَّ الْأَنْصَارَ أَحَبَّهُ اللهُ، وَمَنْ أَبْغَضَ الْأَنْصَارَ أَبْغَضَهُ اللهُ

   ✧ We were at Mu'awiyah's door, and he came out to us and said: 'What were you discussing?' We said: 'We were discussing the Ansar and their hadiths.' Mu'awiyah said: 'I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: Whoever loves the Ansar, God loves him, and whoever hates the Ansar, God hates him.'

   خَطَبَ مُعَاوِيَةُ فَقَالَ: أَلَا مَا بَالُ أَقْوَامٍ يُصَلُّونَ صَلَاةً، فَقَدْ صَحِبْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَمَا رَأَيْنَاهُ يُصَلِّيهَا، وَقَدْ سَمِعْنَاهُ يَنْهَى عَنْهَا

   ✧ Mu'awiyah gave a sermon and said: 'Why do some people pray a prayer that I accompanied the Messenger of God ﷺ and never saw him pray, and I heard him prohibit it?'

   ✧ We were with Mu'awiyah when the muezzin called to prayer, and he said the same as the muezzin, then said: 'Thus I heard your Prophet ﷺ.'

   خَرَجَ مُعَاوِيَةُ فَقَامَ إِلَيْهِ ابْنُ عَامِرٍ، وَجَلَسَ ابْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ، وَكَانَ أَوْزَنَهُمَا، فَقَالَ مُعَاوِيَةُ لِابْنِ عَامِرٍ: اجْلِسْ، فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ: مَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَمْثُلَ لَهُ الرِّجَالُ قِيَامًا فَلْيَتَبَوَّأْ مَقْعَدَهُ مِنَ النَّارِ

   ✧ Mu'awiyah came out, and Ibn Amir stood up for him while Ibn al-Zubayr remained seated, and he was the more balanced of the two. Mu'awiyah said to Ibn Amir: 'Sit down, for I heard the Prophet ﷺ say: Whoever loves for men to stand up for him, let him take his seat in the Fire.'

    أَنَّ مُعَاوِيَةَ قَالَ لِنَفَرٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ: أَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ نَهَى عَنْ صُفَفِ النُّمُورِ ؟ "، فَقَالُوا: اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ. قَالَ: وَأَنَا أَشْهَدُ، قَالَ: " أَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ نَهَى عَنْ لُبْسِ الذَّهَبِ إِلَّا مُقَطَّعًا ؟ "، قَالُوا: اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ. قَالَ: " أَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ نَهَى أَنْ يُقْرَنَ بَيْنَ الْحَجِّ وَالْعُمْرَةِ ؟ "، قَالُوا: اللَّهُمَّ لَا. قَالَ: " وَاللهِ، إِنَّهَا لَمَعَهُنَّ

    ✧ Mu'awiyah said to a group of the Companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ: 'Do you know that the Messenger of God ﷺ prohibited tiger skins?' They said: 'O God, yes.' He said: 'And I bear witness.' He said: 'Do you know that the Prophet ﷺ prohibited wearing gold except in small pieces?' They said: 'O God, yes.' He said: 'Do you know that the Prophet ﷺ prohibited combining Hajj and Umrah?' They said: 'O God, no.' He said: 'By God, it is indeed with them.'

    قَدِمَ مُعَاوِيَةُ الْمَدِينَةَ فَخَطَبَنَا، " وَأَخْرَجَ كُبَّةً مِنْ شَعَرٍ " وَقَالَ: مَا كُنْتُ أَرَى أَنَّ أَحَدًا يَفْعَلُهُ إِلَّا الْيَهُودَ، إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ سَمَّاهُ الزُّورَ

    ✧ Mu'awiyah came to Madinah and addressed us. He took out a lock of hair and said: 'I did not think that anyone would do this except the Jews. The Messenger of God ﷺ called it falsehood.'

    ✧ Mu'awiyah delivered a sermon and said: 'You have introduced an evil fashion. Surely the Messenger of God ﷺ forbade falsehood.'
