   أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَتَى رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنِّي لَا أُحْسِنُ الْقُرْآنَ، فَهَلْ شَيْءٌ يُجْزِئُ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: سُبْحَانَ اللهِ، وَالْحَمْدُ لِلهِ، وَلَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ، وَاللهُ أَكْبَرُ، وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللهِ، ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ الرَّجُلُ، ثُمَّ رَجَعَ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، هَذَا لِلهِ، فَمَاذَا لِي ؟ قَالَ: " قُلِ: اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَارْحَمْنِي، وَعَافِنِي وَاهْدِنِي وَارْزُقْنِي "، فَعَقَدَهُنَّ الرَّجُلُ فِي يَدِهِ عَشْرًا، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " أَمَّا هَذَا فَقَدْ مَلَأَ يَدَيْهِ خَيْرًا

   ✧ A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I do not recite the Qur'an well. Is there something that will suffice me from the Qur'an?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Glory be to Allah, praise be to Allah, there is no god but Allah, Allah is greater, and there is no power or strength except with Allah.' The man turned away, then returned and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, this is for Allah. What is for me?' He said, 'Say: O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, grant me well-being, guide me, and provide for me.' The man counted them on his hand as ten. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'As for this one, he has filled his hands with good.'

   " نَهَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ نَبِيذِ الْجَرِّ الْأَحْمَرِ، قُلْتُ: وَالْأَبْيَضِ ؟ قَالَ: لَا أَدْرِي

   ✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ forbade nabīdh of the red jar. I said: “And the white one?” He said: “I do not know.”

   امْتَرَى أَبُو بُرْدَةَ وَعَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ شَدَّادٍ فِي السَّلَمِ، فَأَرْسَلُونِي إِلَى ابْنِ أَبِي أَوْفَى فَسَأَلْتُهُ، فَقَالَ: كُنَّا نُسْلِمُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي الْبُرِّ وَالشَّعِيرِ وَالزَّبِيبِ وَالتَّمْرِ إِلَى قَوْمٍ مَا هُوَ عِنْدَهُمْ "، قَالَ: فَسَأَلْنَا ابْنَ أَبْزَى فَقَالَ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ

   ✧ Abū Burdah and ʿAbdullāh b. Shaddād disagreed about salam, so they sent me to Ibn Abī Awfā. I asked him, and he said: “We used to engage in salam at the time of the Messenger of God ﷺ in wheat, barley, raisins, and dates, with people who did not have them.” He said: Then we asked Ibn Abzā, and he said the same.

   " نَهَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ لُحُومِ الْحُمُرِ الْأَهْلِيَّةِ

   ✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ forbade the meat of domesticated donkeys.

   كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ فِي دُعَائِهِ: " اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ الْحَمْدُ مِلْءَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمِلْءَ الْأَرْضِ وَمِلْءَ مَا شِئْتَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ بَعْدُ ". قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ: قَالَ قَيْسٌ فِي حَدِيثِهِ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ هَذَا إِذَا رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ مِنَ الرُّكُوعِ

   ✧ In his supplication, the Messenger of God ﷺ used to say: “O God, to You belongs praise, filling the heavens and filling the earth and filling whatever You will after that.” Abū Dāwūd said: Qays said in his ḥadīth: The Messenger of God ﷺ used to say this when he raised his head from bowing.

   " غَزَوْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ سَبْعَ غَزَوَاتٍ نَأْكُلُ مَعَهُ الْجَرَادَ

   ✧ I took part in seven military expeditions with the Messenger of God ﷺ, during which we ate locusts with him.

   كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا أَتَاهُ أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ بِصَدَقَةٍ صَلَّى عَلَيْهِمْ، فَتَصَدَّقَ أَبِي بِصَدَقَةٍ فَقَالَ: اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى آلِ أَبِي أَوْفَى

   ✧ When people of a household brought the Messenger of God ﷺ ṣadaqah, he would invoke blessing upon them. My father gave ṣadaqah, so he said: “O God, bless the family of Abū Awfā.”

   سَمِعَ ابْنَ أَبِي أَوْفَى صَاحِبَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ - وَكَانَ قَدْ شَهِدَ بَيْعَةَ الرِّضْوَانِ - قَالَ: كُنَّا يَوْمَئِذٍ أَلْفًا وَثَلَاثَمِائَةٍ، وَكَانَ أَسْلَمُ يَوْمَئِذٍ ثُمُنَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ

   ✧ He heard Ibn Abī Awfā, the Companion of the Messenger of God ﷺ – and he had witnessed the Pledge of al-Riḍwān – say: “We were on that day one thousand three hundred, and Aslam was on that day one-eighth of the Muhājirūn.”

   سَأَلْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ أَبِي أَوْفَى: هَلْ أَوْصَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ؟ قَالَ: لَا، فَقُلْتُ: فَلِمَ أَمَرَنَا بِالْوَصِيَّةِ وَلَمْ يُوصِ ؟ قَالَ: أَوْصَى بِكِتَابِ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ

   ✧ I asked ʿAbdullāh b. Abī Awfā: “Did the Messenger of God ﷺ leave a will?” He said: “No.” I said: “Then why did he command us to make wills but did not make one himself?” He said: “He left a will of the Book of God, Mighty and Majestic.”

    أَتَيْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ أَبِي أَوْفَى صَاحِبَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ لِي: مَنْ أَنْتَ ؟ وَكَانَ يَوْمَئِذٍ مَحْجُوبَ الْبَصَرِ، فَقُلْتُ: أَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ جُمْهَانَ، فَقَالَ: مَا فَعَلَ أَبُوكَ ؟ قُلْتُ: قَتَلَتْهُ الْأَزَارِقَةُ، فَقَالَ:

    ✧ I came to ʿAbdullāh b. Abī Awfā, the Companion of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he said to me: “Who are you?” – and at that time he had lost his sight. I said: “I am Saʿīd b. Jumhān.” He said: “What happened to your father?” I said: “The Azāriqah killed him.” He said:

    " لَا يَزْنِي الْعَبْدُ حِينَ يَزْنِي وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ، وَلَا يَسْرِقُ حِينَ يَسْرِقُ وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ، وَلَا يَشْرَبُ الْخَمْرَ حِينَ يَشْرَبُهَا وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ، وَلَا يَنْتَهِبُ نُهْبَةً ذَاتَ شَرَفٍ وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ

    ✧ “A slave does not commit fornication while he is a believer, and he does not steal while he is a believer, and he does not drink wine while he is a believer, and he does not seize plunder of great value while he is a believer.”

    ✧ The Prophet ﷺ used to supplicate with this supplication: “O God, to You belongs praise, filling the heavens and filling the earth and filling whatever You will after that.”

    رَأَيْتُ ابْنَ أَبِي أَوْفَى فِي جِنَازَةِ ابْنَتِهِ رَاكِبًا عَلَى بَغْلَةٍ، فَمَرَّ عَلَى نِسْوَةٍ يَتَرَثَّيْنَ، فَقَالَ: إِيَّاكُنَّ وَالتَّرَاثِيَ، فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ نَهَى عَنْهُ، لِتُفِضْ إِحْدَاكُنَّ مِنْ عَبْرَتِهَا

    ✧ I saw Ibn Abi Awfa at the funeral of his daughter, riding a mule. He passed by women who were wailing, and he said: Beware of wailing, for the Messenger of God ﷺ forbade it. Let any of you shed her tears.
