18. ✧ Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, may Allah have mercy on him

    أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ خَرَجَ عِنْدَ الْمَغْرِبِ، فَسَمِعَ صَوْتًا، فَقَالَ: الْيَهُودُ تُعَذَّبُ فِي قُبُورِهَا

    ✧ The Prophet ﷺ went out at sunset and heard a sound, so he said: "The Jews are being punished in their graves."

    نَزَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى أَبِي أَيُّوبَ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ، فَكَانَ إِذَا أَكَلَ طَعَامًا بَعَثَ إِلَيْهِ بِفَضْلِهِ فَيَنْظُرُ إِلَى مَوْضِعِ يَدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَيَضَعُ يَدَهُ فِيهِ، فَبَعَثَ يَوْمًا إِلَيْهِ بِطَعَامٍ، فَلَمْ يَرَ فِيهِ أَثَرَ أَصَابِعِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَأَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، لَمْ أَرَ أَثَرَ أَصَابِعِكَ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّهُ كَانَ فِيهِ ثُومٌ، قَالَ شُعْبَةُ فِي حَدِيثِهِ: أَحَرَامٌ هُوَ ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: لَا، وَقَالَ حَمَّادٌ فِي حَدِيثِهِ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، بَعَثْتَ إِلَيَّ بِمَا لَمْ تَأْكُلْ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّكَ لَسْتَ مِثْلِي ; إِنَّهُ يَأْتِينِي الْمَلَكُ، وَلَسْتُ مِثْلَكَ

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed with Abu Ayyub al-Ansari. When he ate some food, he would send him the leftovers, and he would look at the place where the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ hand had been and put his own hand there. One day he sent him some food, and he did not see in it the trace of the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ fingers. He came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I did not see the trace of your fingers." He said: "There was garlic in it." Shu'bah said in his hadith: "Is it forbidden?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "No." Hammad said in his hadith: "O Messenger of Allah, you sent me back what you did not eat." He said: "You are not like me; an angel comes to me, and I am not like you."

    " جَمَعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ - يَعْنِي بِجَمْعٍ - بَيْنَ الْمَغْرِبِ وَالْعِشَاءِ

    ✧ "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ combined—meaning at Muzdalifah—Maghrib and 'Isha'."

    " إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلِ: الْحَمْدُ لِلهِ عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ، وَلْيَقُلِ الَّذِي يُشَمِّتُهُ: يَرْحَمُكُمُ اللهُ، وَلْيَقُلْ: يَهْدِيكُمُ اللهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ

    ✧ "When one of you sneezes, let him say: 'Praise be to Allah in every situation,' and let the one who responds to him say: 'May Allah have mercy on you all,' and let him say: 'May Allah guide you all and set your affairs aright.'"

    " لَا يَحِلُّ لِمُسْلِمٍ أَنْ يَهْجُرَ أَخَاهُ فَوْقَ ثَلَاثٍ ; يَلْتَقِيَانِ فَيَصُدُّ هَذَا وَيَصُدُّ هَذَا، وَأَفْضَلُهُمَا الَّذِي يَبْدَأُ بِالسَّلَامِ

    ✧ "It is not lawful for a Muslim to abandon his brother for more than three days; they meet and this one turns away and this one turns away, and the best of them is the one who initiates the greeting."

    قَالَ: الْوِتْرُ حَقٌّ أَوْ وَاجِبٌ، مَنْ شَاءَ أَوْتَرَ بِسَبْعٍ، وَمَنْ شَاءَ أَوْتَرَ بِخَمْسٍ، وَمَنْ شَاءَ أَوْتَرَ بِثَلَاثٍ، وَمَنْ شَاءَ أَوْتَرَ بِوَاحِدَةٍ، فَمَنْ غُلِبَ فَلْيُومِئْ إِيمَاءً

    ✧ He said: "Witr is a duty or an obligation. Whoever wishes may perform witr with seven, and whoever wishes may perform witr with five, and whoever wishes may perform witr with three, and whoever wishes may perform witr with one. Whoever is overcome, let him gesture."

    " مَنْ صَامَ رَمَضَانَ ثُمَّ أَتْبَعَهُ بِسِتٍّ مِنْ شَوَّالٍ فَذَلِكَ صِيَامُ السَّنَةِ ".

    ✧ "Whoever fasts Ramadan and then follows it with six from Shawwal, that is the fasting of the year."

    أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ " نَهَى عَنْ صَبْرِ الدَّابَّةِ، قَالَ أَبُو أَيُّوبَ: لَوْ كَانَتْ دَجَاجَةً مَا صَبَرْتُهَا، قَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ - وَكَانَ قَتَلَ أَرْبَعَةَ أَعْلَاجٍ - لَمَّا سَمِعَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ: أَعْتَقَ أَرْبَعَ رِقَابٍ

    ✧ The Prophet ﷺ "forbade confining an animal to shoot it." Abu Ayyub said: "Even if it were a chicken, I would not confine it." 'Abd al-Rahman—who had killed four 'iljs—when he heard this hadith, freed four slaves.

    أَتَيْتُ أَبَا أَيُّوبَ الْأَزْدِيَّ فَصَافَحْتُهُ، فَرَأَى أَظْفَارِي طِوَالًا، قَالَ: أَتَى رَجُلٌ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَسْأَلُهُ، فَقَالَ: يَسْأَلُنِي أَحَدُهُمْ عَنْ خَبَرِ السَّمَاءِ، وَيَدَعُ أَظْفَارَهُ كَأَظْفَارِ الطَّيْرِ، يُجْمَعُ فِيهَا الْجَنَابَةُ وَالتَّفَثُ

    ✧ I came to Abu Ayyub al-Azdi and shook his hand, and he saw that my fingernails were long. He said: "A man came to the Prophet ﷺ asking him, and he said: 'One of them asks me about the news of heaven, while he leaves his fingernails like the talons of birds, in which impurity and dirt collect.'"

    نَزَلَ عَلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ، فَكَانَ يُصَلِّي أَرْبَعًا قَبْلَ الظُّهْرِ، فَسَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ ذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ: " إِنَّ أَبْوَابَ السَّمَاءِ تُفْتَحُ فَلَا تُغْلَقُ حَتَّى تُصَلَّى الظُّهْرُ "، قَالَ: قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَتُسَلِّمُ بَيْنَهُنَّ ؟ قَالَ: " لَا، إِلَّا فِي آخِرِهِنَّ

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed with me, and he used to pray four rak'ahs before Zuhr. I asked him about that, and he said: "The gates of heaven are opened and are not closed until Zuhr is prayed." He said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, do you say the taslim between them?" He said: "No, except at the end of them."

    " يَا أَبَا أَيُّوبَ، أَلَا أَدُلُّكَ عَلَى صَدَقَةٍ يَرْضَى اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ مَوْضِعَهَا ؟ قَالَ: بَلَى، قَالَ: " تُصْلِحُ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ إِذَا تَفَاسَدُوا، وَتُقَرِّبُ بَيْنَهُمْ إِذَا تَبَاعَدُوا

    ✧ "O Abu Ayyub, shall I not guide you to a charity whose place Allah and His Messenger approve of?" He said: "Yes." He said: "You reconcile between people when they have become corrupt, and bring them close when they have become distant."

    كُنَّا بِالْقُسْطَنْطِينِيَّةِ، وَعَلَى أَهْلِ الشَّامِ فَضَالَةُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ، وَعَلَى أَهْلِ مِصْرَ عُقْبَةُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ الْجُهَنِيُّ، فَخَرَجَ إِلَيْنَا صَفٌّ عَظِيمٌ مِنَ الرُّومِ، وَخَرَجَ مِنَّا صَفٌّ عَظِيمٌ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ، فَحَمَلَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ عَلَى صَفِّ الرُّومِ فَقَتَلَ فِيهِمْ، ثُمَّ جَاءَ مُقْبِلًا، فَصَاحَ النَّاسُ، فَقَالُوا: سُبْحَانَ اللهِ، أَلْقَى بِيَدِهِ إِلَى التَّهْلُكَةِ، فَقَامَ أَبُو أَيُّوبَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ فَقَالَ: يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ، إِنَّكُمْ تَأَوَّلُونَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ عَلَى غَيْرِ هَذَا التَّأْوِيلِ، وَإِنَّمَا نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ فِينَا مَعْشَرَ الْأَنْصَارِ، لَمَّا أَعَزَّ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ دِينَهُ، وَكَثَّرَ نَاصِرِيهِ، قُلْنَا بَيْنَنَا سِرًّا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ: إِنَّ أَمْوَالَنَا قَدْ ضَاعَتْ، وَلَوْ أَقَمْنَا فِيهَا فَأَصْلَحْنَا مِنْهَا مَا قَدْ ضَاعَتْ مِنْهَا، فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ يَرُدُّ عَلَيْنَا مَا هَمَمْنَا بِهِ فِي أَنْفُسِنَا أَنْ نُقِيمَ فِي أَمْوَالِنَا فَنُصْلِحَ مَا قَدْ ضَاعَ مِنْهَا، فَكَانَتِ التَّهْلُكَةُ الَّتِي أَرَدْنَا أَنْ نَفْعَلَ، وَأُمِرْنَا بِالْغَزْوِ "، فَمَا زَالَ أَبُو أَيُّوبَ يَغْزُو حَتَّى قَبَضَهُ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ

    ✧ We were at Constantinople, with Fadala b. Ubayd al-Ansari in command of the people of Syria and Uqba b. Amir al-Juhani in command of the people of Egypt. A great rank of the Byzantines came out against us, and a great rank of the Muslims went out against them. A man from the Muslims charged the Byzantine rank and fought among them, then came back. The people shouted and said, "Glory be to God! He has thrown himself into destruction." Abu Ayyub al-Ansari stood up and said, "O people, you are interpreting this verse other than its proper interpretation. This verse was revealed concerning us, the Ansar. When God, Mighty and Majestic, made His religion mighty and increased its supporters, we said among ourselves secretly from the Messenger of God ﷺ, 'Our wealth has been lost; if only we could stay with it and repair what has been lost of it.' Then God, Mighty and Majestic, sent down this verse to refute what we had resolved in ourselves, to stay with our wealth and repair what had been lost of it. The destruction we intended to do was that, and we were commanded to go on expeditions." Abu Ayyub kept going on expeditions until God, Mighty and Majestic, took him.

    " كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي الْمَغْرِبَ فِطْرَ الصَّائِمِ ; مُبَادَرَةَ طُلُوعِ النَّجْمِ

    ✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ used to pray Maghrib at the breaking of the fast of the fasting person, hastening before the rising of the star.
