✧ We were at Constantinople, with Fadala b. Ubayd al-Ansari in command of the people of Syria and Uqba b. Amir al-Juhani in command of the people of Egypt. A great rank of the Byzantines came out against us, and a great rank of the Muslims went out against them. A man from the Muslims charged the Byzantine rank and fought among them, then came back. The people shouted and said, "Glory be to God! He has thrown himself into destruction." Abu Ayyub al-Ansari stood up and said, "O people, you are interpreting this verse other than its proper interpretation. This verse was revealed concerning us, the Ansar. When God, Mighty and Majestic, made His religion mighty and increased its supporters, we said among ourselves secretly from the Messenger of God ﷺ, 'Our wealth has been lost; if only we could stay with it and repair what has been lost of it.' Then God, Mighty and Majestic, sent down this verse to refute what we had resolved in ourselves, to stay with our wealth and repair what had been lost of it. The destruction we intended to do was that, and we were commanded to go on expeditions." Abu Ayyub kept going on expeditions until God, Mighty and Majestic, took him.
