✧ I was sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a man said, “O Messenger of Allah, people have neglected horses, laid down weapons, and said, ‘No jihad; the war has laid down its burdens.’” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned his face and said, “They lie. Now the fighting has come. There will remain a group from my ummah fighting upon the truth, and Allah will cause the hearts of some people to deviate and will provide for them from them, until the Hour comes, or until the promise of Allah comes. And the horse has good tied to its forelock until the Day of Resurrection. And it is revealed to me that I will be taken without delay, and you will follow me in groups, striking the necks of one another. And the abode of the believers is al-Sham.”

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The horse has good tied to its forelock until the Day of Resurrection. Horses are of three kinds: for one man they are a reward, for another a cover, and for another a burden. As for the one for whom they are a reward, he is the man who keeps them for the cause of Allah and prepares them for Him, and nothing that they eat is concealed in their bellies except that a reward is written for him for everything that is concealed in their bellies, even if he lets them graze in a meadow.” And he narrated the rest of the hadith.

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Horses are for a man a reward, for another a cover, and upon another a burden. As for the one for whom they are a reward, he is a man who ties them in the path of Allah and lengthens their rope in a meadow or garden. Whatever they eat during that time from the meadow or garden, he has good deeds for it. And if they break their rope and run one or two elevations, their hoofprints and their droppings are good deeds for him. And if they pass by a river and drink from it, even if he did not intend to water them, that is good deeds for him. So they are a reward for him. A man who ties them to be self-sufficient and to refrain from asking, and does not forget the right of Allah regarding their necks and backs, they are a cover for him. And a man who ties them out of pride, showing off, and enmity against the people of Islam, they are a burden upon him.” The Prophet ﷺ was asked about donkeys, and he said, “Nothing has been revealed to me about them except this comprehensive, unique verse: ‘So whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it’ [al-Zalzalah: 8].”
