✧ [A word of the Prophet ﷺ and his singling out Abū Bakr for mention] Ibn Isḥāq said: Al-Zuhrī said: Ayyūb b. Bashīr narrated to me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out with his head bandaged until he sat on the minbar. Then the first thing he spoke was to pray over the martyrs of Uḥud and ask forgiveness for them, and he prayed over them at length. Then he said: "A servant among Allah's servants whom Allah gave the choice between this world and what is with Him, and he chose what is with Allah." He said: Abū Bakr understood it and knew that he meant himself, so he wept and said: "Rather, we ransom you with our own selves and our children." He said: "Gently, O Abū Bakr." Then he said: "Look at these doors opening into the mosque, and close them except the house of Abū Bakr, for I know no one who was more excellent in companionship toward me than him." Ibn Hishām said: It is also related: "except the door of Abū Bakr." Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbd Allāh narrated to me from some of the family of Abū Saʿīd b. al-Muʿallā that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that day in this speech of his: "If I were to take a close friend from among the servants, I would take Abū Bakr as a close friend, but it is companionship and brotherhood of faith until Allah gathers us together with Him."

✧ [The Messenger's command to dispatch Usāmah's expedition] Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. al-Zubayr related to me, from ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr and other scholars, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ deemed the people slow in dispatching the expedition of Usāmah b. Zayd while he was in his illness. He came out with his head bandaged and sat upon the pulpit. The people had spoken about the command of Usāmah, saying: "He has put a young lad in command over the leading men of the Muhājirūn and the Anṣār." He praised Allah and lauded Him as is His due, then said: "O people, carry out the expedition of Usāmah. By my life, if you speak about his command, you have indeed spoken about the command of his father before him. He is truly worthy of command, and his father was truly worthy of it." He said: Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ descended, and the people hastened in their preparations. The illness of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ intensified, so Usāmah went out, and his army went out with him until they camped at al-Jurf, one farsakh from Madinah. He pitched his camp there, and the people kept assembling to him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ grew worse, so Usāmah and the people stayed to see what Allah would decree regarding the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

✧ [The Messenger's testament concerning the Anṣār] Ibn Isḥāq said: al-Zuhrī said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Kaʿb b. Mālik related to me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said on the day he prayed and sought forgiveness for the companions of Uḥud, and mentioned of their affair what he mentioned, along with his statement on that day: "O company of the Muhājirūn, enjoin good treatment of the Anṣār, for the people are increasing, while the Anṣār, as they are now, are not increasing. They were my close companions (ʿaybah) with whom I took refuge, so be good to the good ones among them and overlook the wrongdoers among them." ʿAbd Allāh said: Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ descended, entered his house, and his illness intensified until he was overcome.

✧ Regarding the matter of the ludud. ʿAbd Allāh said: Some of his wives gathered around him: Umm Salamah, Maymūnah, and some women of the Muslims, among them Asmāʾ bt. ʿUmays, while his uncle al-ʿAbbās was with him. They agreed to give him the ludud, and al-ʿAbbās said: I shall certainly give him the ludud. He said: So they gave him the ludud. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ regained consciousness, he said: Who did this to me? They said: O Messenger of Allah, your uncle. He said: This is a remedy brought by women who came from the direction of that land, and he pointed toward the land of Abyssinia. He said: Why did you do that? His uncle al-ʿAbbās said: We feared, O Messenger of Allah, that you had pleurisy. He said: That is a disease with which Allah, Mighty and Majestic, would not afflict me. Let no one remain in the house without being given the ludud, except my uncle. For Maymūnah was indeed given the ludud while she was fasting, due to the oath of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, as a punishment for what they had done to him.

✧ [The Messenger's supplication for Usāmah by gesture] Ibn Isḥāq said: Saʿīd b. ʿUbayd b. al-Sabbāq narrated to me, from Muḥammad b. Usāmah, from his father Usāmah b. Zayd, who said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ became gravely ill, I descended, and the people descended with me to al-Madinah. I entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he had been rendered speechless, so he was not speaking. He began raising his hand toward the sky, then placing it upon me, and I knew that he was supplicating for me. Ibn Isḥāq said: Ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī said: ʿUbayd b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUtbah narrated to me, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ often—I used to hear him say: "Allah does not take a prophet until He gives him the choice." She said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was near death, the last word I heard from him was his saying: "Nay, the Highest Companion, from Paradise." She said: I said: Then, by Allah, he will not choose us. And I knew that it was what he used to say to us: "A prophet is not taken until he is given the choice."

✧ [Abū Bakr's leading the people in prayer] Al-Zuhrī said: And Ḥamzah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar related to me that ʿĀʾishah said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ became gravely ill, he said: "Command Abū Bakr to lead the people in prayer." She said: I said: "O Prophet of Allah, Abū Bakr is a tender-hearted man, weak of voice, and weeps much when he recites the Qurʾān." He said: "Command him to lead the people in prayer." She said: I repeated the like of my words, and he said: "You are indeed the companions of Joseph; so command him to lead the people in prayer." She said: By Allah, I did not say that except because I wished that it be turned away from Abū Bakr, and I knew that the people would never love a man who stood in his place, and that the people would regard him as an ill omen in every event that occurred; so I wished that it be turned away from Abū Bakr. Ibn Isḥāq said: And Ibn Shihāb said: ʿAbd al-Malik b. Abī Bakr b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Ḥārith b. Hishām related to me, from his father, from ʿAbd Allāh b. Zamaʿah b. al-Aswad b. al-Muṭṭalib b. Asad, who said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ became gravely ill, and I was with him among a group of the Muslims, he said: Bilāl called him to prayer, and he said: "Command someone to lead the people in prayer." He said: So I went out and found ʿUmar among the people, while Abū Bakr was absent; so I said: "Rise, O ʿUmar, and lead the people in prayer." He said: So he rose, and when he said the takbīr, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard his voice, for ʿUmar was a man with a loud voice. He said: So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Where is Abū Bakr? Allah and the Muslims refuse that; Allah and the Muslims refuse that." He said: So someone was sent to Abū Bakr, and he came after ʿUmar had prayed that prayer, and then he led the people in prayer. He said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Zamaʿah said: ʿUmar said to me: "Woe to you, what have you done to me, O Ibn Zamaʿah? By Allah, when you ordered me, I thought only that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had ordered you to do that; and had it not been for that, I would not have led the people in prayer." He said: I said: "By Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not order me to do that; but when I did not see Abū Bakr, I considered you the most entitled of those present to lead the people in prayer."

✧ [The day on which Allah took His Prophet's soul] Ibn Isḥāq said, and al-Zuhrī said: Anas b. Mālik reported to me that on the Monday on which Allah took His Messenger ﷺ, he went out to the people while they were praying the dawn prayer. He lifted the curtain and opened the door, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out and stood at the door of ʿĀʾishah. The Muslims almost broke off their prayer because of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when they saw him, in joy at him, and they made way. He gestured to them: Remain steadfast in your prayer. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled in delight at what he saw of their bearing in their prayer, and I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a finer bearing than he had at that hour. Then he went back, and the people left, thinking that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had recovered from his illness. Abū Bakr returned to his family in al-Sunḥ. Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm b. al-Ḥārith reported to me, from al-Qāsim b. Muḥammad: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said when he heard ʿUmar's takbīr in the prayer: "Where is Abū Bakr? Allah and the Muslims refuse that." Were it not for a statement ʿUmar made at his death, the Muslims would not have doubted that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had appointed Abū Bakr as his successor. But at his death he said: "If I appoint a successor, one better than I appointed a successor; and if I leave them, one better than I left them." So the people knew that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had not appointed anyone as successor, and ʿUmar was not suspected of anything against Abū Bakr. Ibn Isḥāq said: Abū Bakr b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Mulaykah reported to me: On Monday the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out with his head bandaged for the dawn prayer while Abū Bakr was leading the people in prayer. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out, the people made way. Abū Bakr realized that the people did that only for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he stepped back from his place of prayer. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ pushed him in the back and said: "Lead the people in prayer." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat down beside him and prayed seated to the right of Abū Bakr. When he finished the prayer, he turned to the people and spoke to them, raising his voice until it came out of the door of the mosque, saying: "O people, the Fire has been kindled, and trials have come like patches of dark night. By Allah, you cannot hold anything against me. I have not made lawful except what the Qur'an made lawful, and I have not made unlawful except what the Qur'an made unlawful." When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished his speech, Abū Bakr said to him: "O Prophet of Allah, I see that you have risen with Allah's favor and grace as we love. Today is the day of the daughter of Khārijah. Shall I go to her?" He said: "Yes." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered, and Abū Bakr went out to his family in al-Sunḥ.

✧ [The affair of al-ʿAbbās and ʿAlī] Ibn Isḥāq said: Al-Zuhrī said: And ʿAbd Allāh b. Kaʿb b. Mālik narrated to me, from ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbbās, who said: On that day ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib (may Allah be pleased with him) came out to the people from the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the people said to him: O Abū al-Ḥasan, how has the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arisen this morning? He said: He has arisen, praise be to Allah, recovered. He said: Then al-ʿAbbās took him by the hand and said: O ʿAlī, you are, by Allah, after three days a slave of the stick. I swear by Allah, I have recognized death in the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, just as I used to recognize it in the faces of the Banū ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib. So come with us to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; if this matter is to be among us, we will know it, and if it is to be among other than us, we will order him so that he may commend us to the people. He said: ʿAlī said to him: I, by Allah, will not do it. By Allah, if we are denied it, no one after him will give it to us. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died when the forenoon had become intense on that day.

A man from the household of Abū Bakr came in to me with a green tooth-stick in his hand. She said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked at it in his hand with a look by which I knew that he wanted it. She said: I said, "O Messenger of Allah, would you like me to give you this tooth-stick?" He said, "Yes." She said: So I took it and chewed it for him until I softened it, then I gave it to him. She said: He cleaned his teeth with it as vigorously as I ever saw him clean his teeth with a tooth-stick, then he laid it down. And I found the Messenger of Allah ﷺ becoming heavy in my lap. I went to look at his face, and behold his gaze was fixed, and he was saying, "Rather, the Highest Companion, from Paradise." She said: I said, "You were given the choice, and you chose, by the One who sent you with the truth." She said: And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was taken. Ibn Isḥāq said: Yaḥyā b. ʿAbbād b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr narrated to me, from his father ʿAbbād, who said: I heard ʿĀʾishah say: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ died between my chest and my neck, and in my turn; I did not wrong anyone concerning him. It was from my foolishness and youth that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was taken while he was in my lap, then I laid his head on a pillow and got up beating my breast with the women and striking my face.

✧ [ The stance of Abū Bakr after the death of the Messenger ] He said: Abū Bakr came forward until he dismounted at the door of the mosque when the news reached him, while ʿUmar was speaking to the people. He did not pay attention to anything until he entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the house of ʿĀʾishah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was covered with a cloak in a corner of the house, with a striped Yemeni cloak over him. He came forward until he uncovered the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: Then he turned to him and kissed him, then said: May my father and mother be your ransom. As for the death that Allah decreed for you, you have tasted it; then after it no death will ever befall you. He said: Then he returned the cloak over the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, then went out while ʿUmar was speaking to the people. He said: Gently, O ʿUmar, be silent. But ʿUmar refused to stop speaking. When Abū Bakr saw that he would not be silent, he turned to the people. When the people heard his words, they turned to him and left ʿUmar. He praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: O people, whoever worshipped Muhammad, Muhammad has died; whoever worshipped Allah, Allah is alive and does not die. He said: Then he recited this verse: "Muhammad is only a messenger; messengers have passed away before him. If he dies or is killed, will you turn back on your heels? Whoever turns back on his heels will not harm Allah in the least, and Allah will reward the grateful." He said: By Allah, it was as if the people did not know that this verse had been revealed until Abū Bakr recited it that day. He said: The people took it from Abū Bakr, and it was on their tongues. He said: Abū Hurayrah said: ʿUmar said: By Allah, it was only when I heard Abū Bakr recite it that I was stunned and fell to the ground, my legs could not carry me, and I knew that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had died.

✧ THE NURSING OF THE MESSENGER OF ALLAH ﷺ IN ʿĀʾISHAH'S HOUSE [HIS COMING TO ʿĀʾISHAH'S HOUSE] Ibn Isḥāq said: Yaʿqūb b. ʿUtbah narrated to me, from Muḥammad b. Muslim al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUtbah, from ʿĀʾishah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, that she said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out walking between two men of his family: one of them was al-Faḍl b. al-ʿAbbās and another man, with his head bandaged, his feet dragging, until he entered my house. ʿUbayd Allāh said: I related this ḥadīth to ʿAbd Allāh b. al-ʿAbbās, and he said: Do you know who the other man was? He said: I said: No? He said: ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib. [THE SEVERITY OF THE ILLNESS AND POURING WATER OVER HIM] Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was overcome, and his pain intensified, and he said: Pour over me seven water-skins from different wells, so that I may go out to the people and give them my testament. She said: So we seated him in a tub belonging to Ḥafṣah bt. ʿUmar, then we poured water over him until he began to say: Enough of you, enough of you.
