ʿUmar’s speech after the death of the Messenger ﷺ
Translation
✧ [ The stance of Abū Bakr after the death of the Messenger ] He said: Abū Bakr came forward until he dismounted at the door of the mosque when the news reached him, while ʿUmar was speaking to the people. He did not pay attention to anything until he entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the house of ʿĀʾishah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was covered with a cloak in a corner of the house, with a striped Yemeni cloak over him. He came forward until he uncovered the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: Then he turned to him and kissed him, then said: May my father and mother be your ransom. As for the death that Allah decreed for you, you have tasted it; then after it no death will ever befall you. He said: Then he returned the cloak over the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, then went out while ʿUmar was speaking to the people. He said: Gently, O ʿUmar, be silent. But ʿUmar refused to stop speaking. When Abū Bakr saw that he would not be silent, he turned to the people. When the people heard his words, they turned to him and left ʿUmar. He praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: O people, whoever worshipped Muhammad, Muhammad has died; whoever worshipped Allah, Allah is alive and does not die. He said: Then he recited this verse: "Muhammad is only a messenger; messengers have passed away before him. If he dies or is killed, will you turn back on your heels? Whoever turns back on his heels will not harm Allah in the least, and Allah will reward the grateful." He said: By Allah, it was as if the people did not know that this verse had been revealed until Abū Bakr recited it that day. He said: The people took it from Abū Bakr, and it was on their tongues. He said: Abū Hurayrah said: ʿUmar said: By Allah, it was only when I heard Abū Bakr recite it that I was stunned and fell to the ground, my legs could not carry me, and I knew that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had died.
