✧ The Farewell Pilgrimage [The Messenger's preparations and his appointment of Abū Dujānah over Madīnah] Ibn Isḥāq said: When Dhū al-Qaʿdah began for the Messenger of God ﷺ, he prepared for the pilgrimage, and he commanded the people to prepare for it. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Qāsim narrated to me, from his father al-Qāsim b. Muḥammad, from ʿĀʾishah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ set out for the pilgrimage when five nights remained of Dhū al-Qaʿdah. Ibn Hishām said: He appointed over Madīnah Abū Dujānah al-Sāʿidī, and it is also said: Sibāʿ b. ʿUrfuṭah al-Ghifārī.

✧ What the Messenger commanded ʿĀʾishah concerning her menstruation. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Qāsim related to me, from his father al-Qāsim b. Muḥammad, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: No one mentioned, nor did the people mention, anything but the pilgrimage, until when he was at Sarif—and the Messenger of God ﷺ had driven the sacrificial animals with him along with notables among the notables of the people—he commanded the people to come out of iḥrām by performing an ʿumrah, except for those who had driven sacrificial animals. She said: I menstruated that day, and he entered upon me while I was weeping. He said: What is the matter with you, O ʿĀʾishah? Perhaps you have started your period? She said: I replied: Yes, and by God, I wish I had not come out with you this year on this journey. He said: Do not say that, for you shall fulfill all that the pilgrim fulfills, except that you will not circumambulate the House. She said: The Messenger of God ﷺ entered Makkah, and everyone who had no sacrificial animal with him came out of iḥrām, and his wives came out of iḥrām with an ʿumrah. When it was the Day of Sacrifice, I was brought a large quantity of beef, and it was thrown into my dwelling. I said: What is this? They said: The Messenger of God ﷺ slaughtered cows on behalf of his wives. Then, when it was the night of al-Ḥaṣbah, the Messenger of God ﷺ sent me with my brother ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Bakr, and he made me perform an ʿumrah from al-Tanʿīm, in place of my ʿumrah that I had missed. Ibn Isḥāq said: Nāfiʿ, the client of ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar, related to me, from ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar, from Ḥafṣah bt. ʿUmar, who said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ commanded his wives to come out of iḥrām with an ʿumrah, they said: What prevents you, O Messenger of God, from coming out of iḥrām with us? He said: I have garlanded the sacrificial animals and matted my hair, so I will not come out of iḥrām until I slaughter my sacrificial animal.

✧ ʿAlī's meeting with the Messenger, on his return from Yemen, during the pilgrimage [what the Messenger commanded ʿAlī regarding the pilgrimage rites] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Najīḥ related to me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had sent ʿAlī ؓ to Najrān. He met him in Makkah while he was in a state of iḥrām. He entered upon Fāṭimah, daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, may He be pleased with her, and found her out of iḥrām and prepared. He said, "What is the matter with you, O daughter of the Messenger of Allah?" She said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to exit iḥrām with an ʿumrah, so we exited iḥrām." Then he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When he had finished reporting about his journey, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Go and circumambulate the House, and exit iḥrām as your companions have exited iḥrām." He said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have entered iḥrām with the same intention as you." He said, "Return and exit iḥrām as your companions have exited iḥrām." He said, "O Messenger of Allah, when I entered iḥrām I said: O Allah, I enter iḥrām with the same intention as Your Prophet, Your servant, and Your Messenger Muhammad ﷺ." He said, "Do you have any sacrificial animal with you?" He said, "No." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ made him a partner in his own sacrificial animal, and he remained in his iḥrām with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until they both completed the pilgrimage, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ slaughtered the sacrificial animal on behalf of them both.

✧ [The troops complained to the Messenger about ʿAlī because he had taken from them robes of Yemeni cloth] Ibn Isḥāq said: Yaḥyā b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī ʿAmrah related to me, from Yazīd b. Ṭalḥah b. Yazīd b. Rukānah, who said: When ʿAlī ؓ came from Yemen to meet the Messenger of God ﷺ in Makkah, he hastened to the Messenger of God ﷺ and left in charge of the troops who were with him a man from his companions. That man then went and clothed every man of the people with a robe from the cloth that was with ʿAlī ؓ. When his army drew near, he went out to meet them, and behold, they were wearing the robes. He said: Woe to you! What is this? He said: I clothed the people so that they might adorn themselves with it when they came among the people. He said: Woe to you! Strip it off before you bring it to the Messenger of God ﷺ. He said: So he stripped the robes from the people and returned them to the cloth. He said: And the army showed its complaint for what had been done to them. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Maʿmar b. Ḥazm related to me, from Sulaymān b. Muḥammad b. Kaʿb b. ʿUjrah, from his paternal aunt Zaynab bt. Kaʿb, who was married to Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, who said: The people complained about ʿAlī, may God be pleased with him. The Messenger of God ﷺ stood among us as a preacher, and I heard him say: O people, do not complain about ʿAlī. By God, he is indeed too harsh in the cause of God, or in the way of God, to be complained about.

✧ [The Messenger's sermon at the Farewell Pilgrimage] Ibn Isḥāq said: Then the Messenger of God ﷺ proceeded with his pilgrimage, showed the people their rites, taught them the practices of their pilgrimage, and delivered to the people his sermon in which he made clear what he made clear. He praised God and extolled Him, then said: O people, listen to my words, for I do not know—perhaps I shall not meet you after this year of mine at this place ever again. O people, your blood and your wealth are forbidden to you until you meet your Lord, like the sanctity of this day of yours, and like the sanctity of this month of yours. You shall meet your Lord and He will ask you about your deeds. I have conveyed the message. Whoever holds a trust, let him render it to the one who entrusted him with it. Every usurious gain is void, but you shall have your principal sums: you do no wrong and you are not wronged. God has decreed that there is no usury, and the usury of ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib is entirely void. Every blood shed in the Age of Ignorance is void, and the first of your bloods I abolish is the blood of Ibn Rabīʿah b. al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, who was being fostered among the Banū Layth and was killed by Hudhayl; it is the first of the blood of the Age of Ignorance with which I begin. Now then, O people: Satan has despaired of being worshipped in this land of yours ever again, but if he is obeyed in anything besides that, he is content with what you despise of your deeds, so beware of him concerning your religion. O people, the postponement of sacred months is an increase in unbelief by which those who disbelieve are led astray: they allow it one year and forbid it another, to make the number match what God has made sacred, so they make lawful what God has made unlawful and make unlawful what God has made lawful. Time has revolved back to its state on the day God created the heavens and the earth. The number of months with God is twelve months, of which four are sacred: three consecutive, and Rajab of Muḍar, which lies between Jumādā and Shaʿbān. Now then, O people: you have rights over your wives and they have rights over you. You have the right over them that they should not let anyone you dislike tread upon your beds, and that they should not commit open indecency. If they do, God has permitted you to abandon them in the beds and to strike them a blow that is not severe. If they desist, they are entitled to their provision and clothing in an honorable manner. Treat women well, for they are captives in your possession, possessing nothing for themselves. You have taken them only as a trust from God, and you have made their private parts lawful through the words of God. Understand, O people, my words, for I have conveyed the message. I have left among you that which, if you hold fast to it, you will never go astray: a clear matter—the Book of God and the sunnah of His Prophet. O people, listen to my words and understand them. Know that every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim, and that the Muslims are brothers. Nothing is lawful to a man from his brother except what he gives him willingly from the goodness of his heart. Do not wrong yourselves. O God, have I conveyed the message? It was mentioned to me that the people said: O God, yes. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ said: O God, bear witness.

✧ [ THE NAME OF THE ONE WHO CRIED OUT THE MESSENGER'S WORDS AND WHAT HE REPEATED ] Ibn Isḥāq said: Yaḥyā b. ʿAbbād b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr narrated to me, from his father ʿAbbād, who said: The man who cried out among the people, saying what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said while he was at ʿArafah, was Rabīʿah b. Umayyah b. Khalaf. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: "Say: O people, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ says: Do you not know which month this is?" He said it to them, and they said: "The sacred month." Then he said: "Say to them: Allah has made your blood and your property inviolable to you until you meet your Lord, like the inviolability of this your month." Then he said: "Say: O people, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ says: Do you know which land this is?" He said: He cried it out. They said: "The sacred land." Then he said: "Say to them: Allah has made your blood and your property inviolable to you until you meet your Lord, like the inviolability of this your land." Then he said: "Say: O people, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ says: Do you know which day this is?" He said: He said it to them. They said: "The day of the greater pilgrimage." Then he said: "Say to them: Allah has made your blood and your property inviolable to you until you meet your Lord, like the inviolability of this your day."

✧ [The narration of Ibn Khārijah concerning what he heard from the Messenger at the Farewell Pilgrimage] Ibn Isḥāq said: Layth b. Abī Sulaym narrated to me, from Shahr b. Ḥawshab al-Ashʿarī, from ʿAmr b. Khārijah, who said: ʿAttāb b. Asīd sent me to the Messenger of God ﷺ on some errand, while the Messenger of God ﷺ was standing at ʿArafah. I delivered it to him, then I stood beneath the she-camel of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and its foam was falling on my head. I heard him saying: O people, God has delivered to every possessor of a right his right; and no bequest is permissible to an heir; the child belongs to the bed, and the stone is for the fornicator. Whoever claims descent from other than his father, or takes as patrons other than his true patrons, upon him is the curse of God, the angels, and all people. God will accept from him neither ṣarf nor ʿadl.

✧ [Some of the Messenger's teaching during the Pilgrimage] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Najīḥ related to me that the Messenger of God ﷺ, when he stood at ʿArafah, said: "This is the standing place, for the mountain upon which he was, and all of ʿArafah is a standing place." He said when he stood upon Quzaḥ on the morning of Muzdalifah: "This is the standing place, and all of Muzdalifah is a standing place." Then when he sacrificed at the place of sacrifice in Minā, he said: "This is the place of sacrifice, and all of Minā is a place of sacrifice." Thus the Messenger of God ﷺ completed the Pilgrimage, having shown them their rites and taught them what God had made obligatory upon them in their Pilgrimage: the standing, the casting of the pebbles, the circumambulation of the House, what was made lawful for them in their Pilgrimage, and what was forbidden to them. It was the Pilgrimage of Conveyance and the Farewell Pilgrimage, for the Messenger of God ﷺ did not perform the Pilgrimage after it.
