88. Mention of the two liars, Musaylimah al-Ḥanafī and al-Aswad al-ʿAnsī

    ذِكْرُ الْكَذَّابَينَ مُسَيْلِمَةَ الْحَنَفِيِّ وَالْأَسْوَدِ الْعَنْسِيَّ قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: وَقَدْ كَانَ تَكَلَّمَ فِي عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ الْكَذَّابَانِ مُسَيْلِمَةُ بْنُ حَبِيبٍ بِالْيَمَامَةِ فِي بَنِي حَنِيفَةَ، وَالْأَسْوَدُ بْنُ كَعْبٍ الْعَنْسِيَّ بِصَنْعَاءَ. [ رُؤْيَا الرَّسُولِ فِيهِمَا ] قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: حَدَّثَنِي يَزِيدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ قُسَيْطٍ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ أَوْ أَخِيهِ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ يَسَارٍ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ يَخْطُبُ النَّاسَ عَلَى مِنْبَرِهِ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ: أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ، إنِّي قَدْ رَأَيْتُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ، ثُمَّ أُنْسِيتهَا، وَرَأَيْتُ فِي ذِرَاعَيَّ سِوَارَيْنِ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ، فَكَرِهْتهمَا، فَنَفَخْتُهُمَا فَطَارَا، فَأَوَّلْتهمَا هَذَيْنِ الْكَذَّابَيْنِ: صَاحِبِ الْيَمَنِ، وَصَاحِبِ الْيَمَامَةِ

    ✧ Mention of the two liars Musaylimah al-Ḥanafī and al-Aswad al-ʿAnsī. Ibn Isḥāq said: The two liars had spoken during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: Musaylimah b. Ḥabīb in al-Yamāmah among the Banū Ḥanīfah, and al-Aswad b. Kaʿb al-ʿAnsī in Ṣanʿāʾ. [The Messenger's vision concerning them] Ibn Isḥāq said: Yazīd b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Qusayṭ related to me, from ʿAṭāʾ b. Yasār or his brother Sulaymān b. Yasār, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was addressing the people from his pulpit, saying: "O people, I saw the Night of Power, then I was made to forget it. And I saw on my two forearms two bracelets of gold, and I disliked them, so I blew on them and they flew away. I interpreted them as these two liars: the one of Yemen and the one of al-Yamāmah."

    [ حَدِيثُ الرَّسُولِ عَنْ الدَّجَّالِينَ ] قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: وَحَدَّثَنِي مَنْ لَا أَتَّهِمُ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: لَا تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ حَتَّى يَخْرُجَ ثَلَاثُونَ دَجَّالًا، كُلُّهُمْ يَدَّعِي النُّبُوَّةَ

    ✧ [The Messenger's account concerning the false prophets] Ibn Isḥāq said: And one whom I do not suspect narrated to me from Abū Hurayrah that he said: I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: The Hour will not come until thirty dajjāls come forth, all of them claiming prophethood.

    خُرُوجُ الْأُمَرَاءِ وَالْعُمَّالِ عَلَى الصَّدَقَاتِ [ الْأُمَرَاءُ وَأَسْمَاءُ الْعُمَّالِ وَمَا تَوَلَّوْهُ ] قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَدْ بَعَثَ أُمَرَاءَهُ وَعُمَّالَهُ عَلَى الصَّدَقَاتِ، إلَى كُلِّ مَا أَوْطَأَ الْإِسْلَامُ مِنْ الْبُلْدَانِ؛ فَبَعَثَ الْمُهَاجِرَ بْنَ أَبِي أُمَيَّةَ بْنَ الْمُغِيرَةِ إلَى صَنْعَاءَ، فَخَرَجَ عَلَيْهِ الْعَنْسِيَّ وَهُوَ بِهَا؛ وَبَعَثَ زِيَادَ بْنَ لَبِيدٍ، أَخَا بَنِي بَيَاضَةَ الْأَنْصَارِيَّ، إلَى حَضْرَمَوْتَ وَعَلَى صَدَقَاتِهَا؛ وَبَعَثَ عَدِيَّ بْنَ حَاتِمٍ عَلَى طَيِّئ وَصَدَقَاتِهَا، وَعَلَى بَنِي أَسَدٍ؛ وَبَعَثَ مَالِكَ بْنَ نُوَيْرَةَ - قَالَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ: الْيَرْبُوعِيُّ - عَلَى صَدَقَاتِ بَنِي حَنْظَلَةَ، وَفَرَّقَ صَدَقَةَ بَنِي سَعْدٍ عَلَى رَجُلَيْنِ مِنْهُمْ، فَبَعَثَ الزِّبْرِقَانَ بْنَ بَدْرٍ عَلَى نَاحِيَةٍ مِنْهَا، وَقَيْسَ بْنَ عَاصِمٍ عَلَى نَاحِيَةٍ، وَكَانَ قَدْ بَعَثَ الْعَلَاءَ بْنَ الْحَضْرَمِيِّ عَلَى الْبَحْرَيْنِ، وَبَعَثَ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رِضْوَانُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ إلَى أَهْلِ نَجْرَانَ، لِيَجْمَعَ صَدَقَتَهُمْ وَيَقْدَمَ عَلَيْهِ بِجِزْيَتِهِمْ.

    ✧ The Dispatch of the Commanders and Collectors for the Alms [The commanders and the names of the collectors and what they were put in charge of] Ibn Isḥāq said: The Messenger of God ﷺ had sent his commanders and collectors for the alms to every land over which Islam had gained a foothold. He sent al-Muhājir b. Abī Umayyah b. al-Mughīrah to Ṣanʿāʾ, and al-ʿAnsī rose against him while he was there. He sent Ziyād b. Labīd, the brother of the Banū Bayāḍah the Anṣārī, to Ḥaḍramawt and over its alms. He sent ʿAdī b. Ḥātim over Ṭayyiʾ and its alms, and over the Banū Asad. He sent Mālik b. Nuwayrah — Ibn Hishām said: al-Yarbūʿī — over the alms of the Banū Ḥanẓalah, and he divided the alms of the Banū Saʿd between two men from among them: he sent al-Zibriqān b. Badr over one district of it, and Qays b. ʿĀṣim over another district. He had sent al-ʿAlāʾ b. al-Ḥaḍramī over al-Baḥrayn, and he sent ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, may God be pleased with him, to the people of Najrān, to collect their alms and bring him their jizyah.

    كِتَابُ مُسَيْلِمَةَ إلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ وَالْجَوَابُ عَنْهُ وَقَدْ كَانَ مُسَيْلِمَةُ بْنُ حَبِيبٍ، قَدْ كَتَبَ إلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ: مِنْ مُسَيْلِمَةَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ، إلَى مُحَمَّدٍ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ: سَلَامٌ عَلَيْكَ؛ أَمَّا بَعْدُ، فَإِنِّي قَدْ أُشْرِكْتُ فِي الْأَمْرِ مَعَكَ، وَإِنَّ لَنَا نِصْفَ الْأَرْضِ، وَلِقُرَيْشٍ نِصْفَ الْأَرْضِ، وَلَكِنَّ قُرَيْشًا قَوْمٌ يَعْتَدُونَ. فَقَدِمَ عَلَيْهِ رَسُولَانِ لَهُ بِهَذَا الْكِتَابِ. قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: فَحَدَّثَنِي شَيْخٌ مِنْ أَشْجَعَ، عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ نُعَيْمِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ الْأَشْجَعِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ نُعَيْمٍ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ لَهُمَا حِينَ قَرَأَ كِتَابَهُ: فَمَا تَقُولَانِ أَنْتُمَا ؟ قَالَا: نَقُولُ كَمَا قَالَ، فَقَالَ: أَمَا وَاَللَّهِ لَوْلَا أَنَّ الرُّسُلَ لَا تُقْتَلُ لَضَرَبْتُ أَعْنَاقَكُمَا. ثُمَّ كَتَبَ إلَى مُسَيْلِمَةَ: بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ، مِنْ مُحَمَّدٍ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ، إلَى مُسَيْلِمَةَ الْكَذَّابِ: السَّلَامُ عَلَى مَنْ اتَّبَعَ الْهُدَى. أَمَّا بَعْدُ، فَإِنَّ الْأَرْضَ لِلَّهِ يُورَثُهَا مَنْ يُشَاءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ، وَالْعَاقِبَةُ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ. وَذَلِكَ فِي آخِرِ سَنَةِ عَشْرٍ.

    ✧ Musaylimah's letter to the Messenger of Allah and the reply to it Musaylimah b. Ḥabīb had written to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: From Musaylimah, Messenger of Allah, to Muḥammad, Messenger of Allah: Peace be upon you. Now then, I have been made a partner in the affair with you. We shall have half the land, and Quraysh shall have half the land, but Quraysh are a people who transgress. Two messengers of his came to him with this letter. Ibn Isḥāq said: A shaykh from Ashjaʿ narrated to me, from Salamah b. Nuʿaym b. Masʿūd al-Ashjaʿī, from his father Nuʿaym, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say to the two of them when he had read his letter: "What do you two say?" They said: "We say as he says." He said: "By Allah, were it not that messengers are not to be killed, I would strike off your necks." Then he wrote to Musaylimah: In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate. From Muḥammad, Messenger of Allah, to Musaylimah the liar: Peace be upon him who follows guidance. Now then, the earth belongs to Allah; He gives it as inheritance to whom He wills of His servants, and the final outcome is for the God-fearing. That was at the end of the year ten.
