19. Oaths

  1. Sahih Ibn Hibban 4328Sahih

    سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَيُّ النَّاسِ خَيْرٌ؟ قَالَ «قَرْنِي ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ ثُمَّ يَجِيءُ قَوْمٌ تَبْدُرُ شَهَادَةُ أَحَدِهِمْ يَمِينَهُ وَيَمِينُهُ شَهَادَتَهُ»

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked: "Which people are best?" He said: "My generation, then those who follow them, then those who follow them. Then there will come a people whose testimony precedes their oath and whose oath precedes their testimony."

    أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ اسْتَقْبَلَهُ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ غِلْمَانٌ وَإِمَاءٌ وَعُبَيْدٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ فَقَالَ «وَاللَّهِ إِنِّي لَأُحِبُّكُمْ»

    ✧ One day the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was met by boys and slave girls and slaves from the Ansar, and he said: "By Allah, I love you."

  3. Sahih Ibn Hibban 4330Sahih

    «وَاللَّهِ مَا الدُّنْيَا فِي الْآخِرَةِ إِلَّا كَمَا يَجْعَلُ أَحَدُكُمْ إِصْبَعَهُ فِي الْيَمِّ فَلْيَنْظُرْ بِمَ تَرْجِعُ»

    ✧ By Allah, the world compared to the Hereafter is only like one of you dipping his finger into the sea; let him see what it brings back.

  4. Sahih Ibn Hibban 4331Sahih

    قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «مَا يَخْفَى عَلَيَّ حِينَ تَكُونِينَ غَضْبَى وَحِينَ تَكُونِينَ رَاضِيَةً إِذَا كُنْتِ غَضْبَى قُلْتِ لَا وَرَبِّ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَإِذَا كُنْتِ رَاضِيَةً قُلْتُ لَا وَرَبِّ مُحَمَّدٍ» فَقُلْتُ صَدَقْتَ إِنَّمَا أَهْجُرُ اسْمَكَ قَالَتْ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَرَأَيْتَ لَوَ نَزَلْتَ وَادِيًا فِيهِ شَجَرٌ كَثِيرٌ قَدْ أُكِلَ مِنْهَا وَوَجَدْتَ شَجَرَةً لَمْ يُؤْكَلْ مِنْهَا فِي أَيِّهَا كُنْتَ تَرْتَعُ بَعِيرَكَ؟ قَالَ «فِي الَّذِي لَمْ يُرْتَعْ فِيهَا»

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: "It does not escape me when you are angry and when you are pleased. When you are angry, you say: No, by the Lord of Ibrahim; and when you are pleased, you say: No, by the Lord of Muhammad." I said: "You have spoken the truth. I only abandon your name." She said: "I said: O Messenger of Allah, consider if you descended into a valley in which there are many trees that have been grazed, and you found a tree that has not been grazed, in which of them would you leave your camel to graze?" He said: "In the one that has not been grazed."

  5. Sahih Ibn Hibban 4332Sahih

    كَانَ يَمِينُ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ الَّتِي يَحْلِفُ عَلَيْهَا «لَا وَمُقَلِّبِ الْقُلُوبِ»

    ✧ The oath of the Prophet ﷺ, by which he used to swear, was: "No, by the Turner of the hearts."

  6. Sahih Ibn Hibban 4333Sahih

    سَأَلْتُ عَطَاءً عَنِ اللَّغْوِ فِي الْيَمِينِ فَقَالَ قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ «هُوَ كَلَامُ الرَّجُلِ كَلَّا وَاللَّهِ وَبَلَى وَاللَّهِ»

    ✧ I asked Ata about al-laghw (unintentional oaths) in oaths, and he said: Aishah said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'It is a man's saying: No, by Allah, and Yes, by Allah.'"

  7. Sahih Ibn Hibban 4334Sahih

    «إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَجَاوَزَ لِأُمَّتِي عَنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ حَدَّثَتْ بِهِ أَنْفُسَهَا مَا لَمْ تَتَكَلَّمْ أَوْ تَعْمَلْ بِهِ»

    ✧ "Indeed Allah has overlooked for my Ummah whatever their souls whisper to them, as long as they do not speak of it or act upon it."

  8. Sahih Ibn Hibban 4335Sahih

    «إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَجَاوَزَ لِأُمَّتِي عَمَّا حَدَّثَتْ بِهِ أَنْفُسَهَا مَا لَمْ تَنْطِقْ أَوْ تَعْمَلْ بِهِ»

    ✧ "Indeed Allah has overlooked for my Ummah whatever their souls whisper to them, as long as they do not utter it or act upon it."

  9. Sahih Ibn Hibban 4336Sahih

    «رَأَى عِيسَى ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ رَجُلًا سَرَقَ فَقَالَ عِيسَى أَسَرَقْتَ؟ قَالَ كَلَّا وَالَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ فَقَالَ عِيسَى آمَنْتُ بِاللَّهِ وَكَذَّبْتُ عَيْنِي»

    ✧ "Isa b. Maryam saw a man stealing, so Isa said: 'Did you steal?' The man said: 'No, by the One besides whom there is no god.' So Isa said: 'I believe in Allah, and I disbelieve my own eyes.'"

    «حَلَفَ سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ لَيَطُوفَنَّ عَلَى مِائَةِ امْرَأَةٍ كُلُّ امْرَأَةٍ مِنْهُنَّ تَحْمِلُ غُلَامًا يُجَاهِدُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ قَالَ فَلَمْ تَحْمِلْ مِنْهُنَّ إِلَّا امْرَأَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ نِصْفَ غُلَامٍ» فَقَالَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ «لَوْ قَالَ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ كَانَ كَمَا قَالَ»

    ✧ "Sulayman b. Dawud swore: 'I will go around to one hundred women, each of whom will bear a boy who will fight in the path of Allah.' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'If he had said: If Allah wills, it would have been as he said.'"

  11. Sahih Ibn Hibban 4338Sahih

    «حَلَفَ سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ لَيَطُوفَنَّ اللَّيْلَةَ بِتِسْعِينَ امْرَأَةً تَلِدُ كُلُّ امْرَأَةٍ مِنْهُنَّ غُلَامًا يُقَاتِلُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ صَاحِبُهُ أَوِ الْمَلِكُ قُلْ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ فَنَسِيَ وَأَطَافَ تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةَ بِتِسْعِينَ امْرَأَةً فَمَا جَاءَتِ امْرَأَةٌ مِنْهُنَّ إِلَّا وَاحِدَةٌ بِشِقِّ غُلَامٍ» فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «لَوْ قَالَ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ لَمْ يَحْنَثْ وَكَانَ أَدْرَكَ حَاجَتَهُ»

    ✧ "Sulayman b. Dawud swore: 'Tonight I will go around to ninety women, each of whom will give birth to a boy who will fight in the path of Allah.' His companion, or the angel, said to him: 'Say: If Allah wills.' But he forgot and went around that night to ninety women, and none of them brought anything except one woman who brought half a boy." The Prophet ﷺ said: "If he had said: If Allah wills, he would not have broken his oath, and he would have attained his need."

    «مَنْ حَلَفَ فَقَالَ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ فَقَدِ اسْتَثْنَى»

    ✧ "Whoever swears an oath and says: If Allah wills, has made an exception."

  13. Sahih Ibn Hibban 4340Sahih

    «مَنْ حَلَفَ فَقَالَ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ لَمْ يَحْنَثْ»

    ✧ "Whoever swears an oath and says: If Allah wills, will not break his oath."

  14. Sahih Ibn Hibban 4341Sahih

    «مَنْ حَلَفَ فَقَالَ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ فَقَدِ اسْتَثْنَى»

    ✧ "Whoever swears an oath and says: If Allah wills, has made an exception."

  15. Sahih Ibn Hibban 4342Sahih

    «مَنْ حَلَفَ فَاسْتَثْنَى فَهُوَ بِالْخِيَارِ إِنْ شَاءَ مَضَى وَإِنْ شَاءَ تَرَكَ غَيْرَ حَنِثٍ»

    ✧ "Whoever swears an oath and makes an exception, he has the choice: if he wishes, he may proceed; and if he wishes, he may leave, without breaking his oath."

  16. Sahih Ibn Hibban 4343Sahih

    «وَاللَّهِ لَأَغْزُوَنَّ قُرَيْشًا وَاللَّهِ لَأَغْزُوَنَّ قُرَيْشًا وَاللَّهِ لَأَغْزُوَنَّ قُرَيْشًا» ثُمَّ سَكَتَ فَقَالَ «إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ»

    ✧ «By Allah, I will surely raid Quraysh; by Allah, I will surely raid Quraysh; by Allah, I will surely raid Quraysh.» Then he fell silent and said, «If Allah wills.»

  17. Sahih Ibn Hibban 4344Sahih

    «مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى مُلْكِ يَمِينِهِ أَنْ يَضْرِبَهُ فَكَفَّارَتُهُ تَرَكُهُ وَمَعَ الْكَفَّارَةِ حَسَنَةٌ»

    ✧ «Whoever swears an oath concerning his possession that he will strike it, its expiation is to leave it, and with the expiation there is a good deed.»

  18. Sahih Ibn Hibban 4345Sahih

    «مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ فَرَأَى غَيْرَهَا خَيْرًا مِنْهَا فَلْيَأْتِ الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ ثُمَّ لِيَتْرُكْ يَمِينَهُ»

    He who took an oath, but he found something else better than that, should do that which is better and break his oath. (Using translation from Muslim 1651b)

  19. Sahih Ibn Hibban 4346Hasan

    أَنَّ رَجُلًا جَاءَهُ فَسَأَلَهُ نَفَقَةً فَقَالَ مَا عِنْدِي شَيْءٌ أُعْطِيكَهُ إِلَّا دِرْعِي وَمِغْفَرِي فَأَكْتُبُ إِلَى أَهْلِي أَنْ تَعْطِيكَهَا فَلَمْ يَرْضَ فَحَلَفَ أَنْ لَا يُعْطِيَهُ شَيْئًا ثُمَّ رَضِيَ الرَّجُلُ فَقَالَ عَدِيٌّ لَوْلَا أَنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ « مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ ثُمَّ رَأَى مَا هُوَ أَتْقَى لِلَّهِ مِنْهَا فَلْيَأْتِ التَّقْوَى» مَا حَنَثْتُ

    ✧ that a man came to him and asked him for provision. He said: I have nothing to give you except my coat of mail and my helmet, so I will write to my family to give it to you. He was not satisfied, so he swore that he would not give him anything. Then the man became satisfied, and 'Adi said: Were it not that I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, «Whoever swears an oath and then sees something more God-fearing than it, let him do the God-fearing thing,» I would not have broken my oath.

  20. Sahih Ibn Hibban 4347Sahih

    «مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ فَرَأَى غَيْرَهَا خَيْرًا مِنْهَا فَلْيَأْتِ الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ وَلْيُكَفِّرْ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ»

    ✧ «Whoever swears an oath and then sees something better than it, let him do what is better and expiate his oath.»

  21. Sahih Ibn Hibban 4348Sahih

    «يَا عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ لَا تَسْأَلِ الْإِمَارَةَ فَإِنَّكَ إِنْ أَتَتْكَ عَنْ مَسْأَلَةٍ وُكِلْتَ إِلَيْهَا وَإِنْ أَتَتْكَ مِنْ غَيْرِ مَسْأَلَةٍ أُعِنْتَ عَلَيْهَا وَإِذَا حَلَفْتَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ وَرَأَيْتَ غَيْرَهَا خَيْرًا مِنْهَا فَأْتِ الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ وَكَفِّرْ عَنْ يَمِينِكِ»

    ✧ «O 'Abd al-Rahman, do not ask for authority, for if it comes to you by asking, you will be left to it; and if it comes to you without asking, you will be helped with it. And when you swear an oath and then see something better than it, do what is better and expiate your oath.»

  22. Sahih Ibn Hibban 4349Sahih

    «مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ فَرَأَى غَيْرَهَا خَيْرًا مِنْهَا فَلْيُكَفِّرْ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَلْيَفْعَلِ الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ»

    ✧ «Whoever swears an oath and then sees something better than it, let him expiate his oath and do what is better.»

  23. Sahih Ibn Hibban 4350Sahih

    نَزَلَ عَلَيْنَا أَضْيَافٌ لَنَا وَكَانَ أَبِي يَتَحَدَّثُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَانْطَلَقَ وَقَالَ يَا عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ افْرُغْ مِنْ أَضْيَافِكَ فَلَمَّا أَمْسَيْتُ جِئْنَا بِقِرَاهُمْ فَأَبَوْا وَقَالُوا حَتَّى يَجِيءَ أَبُوكَ مَنْزِلَهُ فَيَطْعَمُ مَعَنَا فَقُلْتُ إِنَّهُ رَجُلٌ حَدِيدٌ وَإِنَّكُمْ إِنْ لَمْ تَفْعَلُوا خِفْتُ أَنْ يُصِيبَنِي مِنْهُ أَذًى فَأَبَوْا عَلَيْنَا فَلَمَّا جَاءَ قَالَ قَدْ فَرَغْتُمْ مِنْ أَضْيَافِكُمْ فَقَالُوا لَا وَاللَّهِ فَقَالَ أَلَمْ آمُرُ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ وَتَنَحَّيْتُ قَالَ أَقْسَمْتُ عَلَيْكَ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَسْمَعُ صَوْتِي إِلَّا جِئْتَ فَجِئْتُ فَقُلْتُ وَاللَّهِ مَا لِي ذَنْبٌ هَؤُلَاءِ أَضْيَافُكَ فَسَلْهُمْ قَدْ أَتَيْتُهُمْ بِقِرَاهُمْ فَأَبَوْا أَنْ يَطْعَمُوا حَتَّى تَجِيءَ فَقَالَ مَا لَكُمْ لَا تَقْبَلُونَ عَنَّا قِرَاكُمْ؟ وَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَاللَّهِ لَا أَطْعَمُهُ اللَّيْلَةَ قَالُوا فَوَاللَّهِ لَا نَطْعَمُهُ حَتَّى تَطْعَمَهُ فَقَالَ لَمْ أَرْ كَالشَّرِّ مُنْذُ اللَّيْلَةِ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَمَّا الْأَوَّلُ فَمِنِ الشَّيْطَانِ فَهَلُمُّوا قِرَاكُمْ فَجِيءَ بِالطَّعَامِ فَسَمَّى اللَّهَ وَأَكَلَ وَأَكَلُوا فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحَ غَدَا عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ بَرُّوا وَحَنِثْتُ فَقَالَ «بَلْ أَنْتَ أَبَرُّهُمْ وَخَيْرُهُمْ»

    ✧ Guests came to stay with us, and my father was talking to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the night. He departed and said: O 'Abd al-Rahman, take care of your guests. When evening came, we brought them their hospitality, but they refused and said: Not until your father comes to his house and eats with us. I said: He is a stern man, and if you do not do so, I fear that some harm may befall me from him. They refused. When he came, he said: Have you finished with your guests? They said: No, by Allah. He said: Did I not command 'Abd al-Rahman? I moved aside, and he said: I adjure you, if you can hear my voice, come. So I came and said: By Allah, I have no fault; these are your guests, so ask them. I brought them their hospitality, but they refused to eat until you came. He said: What is wrong with you that you do not accept our hospitality from us? Abu Bakr said: By Allah, I will not eat it tonight. They said: By Allah, we will not eat it until you eat it. He said: I have not seen evil like tonight. Then he said: As for the first, it is from Satan, so bring your hospitality. The food was brought, and he invoked the name of Allah and ate, and they ate. When morning came, he went to the Prophet ﷺ and said: O Messenger of Allah, they were righteous and I broke my oath. He said: «Rather, you are the most righteous of them and the best of them.»

    أَتَى أَبُو مُوسَى الْأَشْعَرِيُّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَسْتَحْمِلُهُ لِنَفَرٍ مِنْ قَوْمِهِ فَقَالَ وَاللَّهِ لَا أَحْمِلُهُمْ فَأُتِيَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِنَهْبٍ مِنْ إِبِلٍ فَفَرَّقَهَا فَبَقِيَ مِنْهَا خَمْسُ عَشْرَةَ فَقَالَ «أَيْنَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ قَيْسٍ؟ » قَالَ هُوَ ذَا هُوَ فَقَالَ «خُذْ هَذِهِ فَاحْمِلْ عَلَيْهَا قَوْمَكَ» قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّكَ كُنْتَ قَدْ حَلَفْتَ قَالَ «وَإِنْ كُنْتُ حَلَفْتُ»

    ✧ Abu Musa al-Ash'ari came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asking him to provide mounts for a group of his people. He said: By Allah, I will not provide them mounts. Then some camels were brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as spoils, and he distributed them, leaving fifteen. He said: «Where is 'Abd Allah b. Qays?» He said: Here he is. He said: «Take these and mount your people on them.» He said: O Messenger of Allah, you had sworn an oath. He said: «And even if I swore?»

  25. Sahih Ibn Hibban 4352Hasan sahih

    «مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينً فَرَأَى غَيْرَهَا خَيْرًا مِنْهَا فَلْيَأْتِ الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ وَلْيُكَفِّرْ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ»

    ✧ «Whoever swears an oath and then sees something better than it, let him do what is better and expiate his oath.»

  26. Sahih Ibn Hibban 4353Hasan sahih

    كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ لَمْ يَحْنَثْ حَتَّى نَزَلَتْ كَفَّارَةُ الْيَمِينِ فَقَالَ ﷺ «لَا أَحْلِفُ عَلَى يَمِينٍ فَأَرَى غَيْرَهَا خَيْرًا مِنْهَا إِلَّا أَتَيْتُ الَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ وَكَفَّرْتُ عَنْ يَمِينِي»

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when he swore an oath, did not break it until the expiation for oaths was revealed. Then he ﷺ said: «I do not swear an oath and then see something better than it except that I do what is better and expiate my oath.»

  27. Sahih Ibn Hibban 4354Sahih

    كُنَّا مُشَاةً فَأَتَيْنَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ ﷺ نَسْتَحْمِلُهُ فَقَالَ «وَاللَّهِ لَا أَحْمِلُكُمُ الْيَوْمَ» أَوْ قَالَ «وَاللَّهِ لَا أَحْمِلُكُمْ» قَالَ فَلَمَّا رَجَعْنَا إِلَى الْمَنْزِلِ أَوْ قَالَ حِينَ رَجَعْنَا إِلَى الْمَنْزِلِ أَتَاهُ قَطِيعٌ مِنْ إِبِلٍ فَإِذَا قَدْ بَعَثَ إِلَيْنَا بِثَلَاثٍ بُقْعِ الذُّرَى قَالَ بَعْضُنَا لِبَعْضٍ أَنَرْكَبُ وَقَدْ حَلَفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَتَيْنَاهُ فَقُلْنَا يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ إِنَّكَ قَدْ حَلَفْتَ قَالَ «إِنِّي وَاللَّهِ مَا أَحْمِلُكُمْ إِنَّمَا حَمَلَكُمُ اللَّهُ وَمَا عَلَى الْأَرْضِ مِنْ يَمِينٍ أَحْلِفُ عَلَيْهَا ثُمَّ أَرَى خَيْرًا مِنْهَا إِلَّا أَتَيْتُهَا أَوْ أَتَيْتُهُ»

    ✧ We were on foot, so we came to the Prophet of Allah ﷺ asking him to provide us mounts. He said: «By Allah, I will not provide you mounts today,» or he said: «By Allah, I will not provide you mounts.» He said: When we returned to the camp—or he said: when we returned to the camp—a herd of camels came to him, and then he sent to us three with white spots on their humps. Some of us said to others: Shall we ride when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has sworn an oath? We came to him and said: O Prophet of Allah, you have sworn an oath. He said: «By Allah, I do not provide you mounts; only Allah has provided you mounts. There is no oath on earth that I swear and then see something better than it except that I do it.»

  28. Sahih Ibn Hibban 4355Weak

    أَنَّ أَخَوَيْنِ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ كَانَ بَيْنَهُمَا مِيرَاثٌ فَسَأَلَ أَحَدُهُمَا صَاحِبَهُ الْقِسْمَةَ فَقَالَ لَئِنْ عُدْتَ تَسْأَلُنِي الْقِسْمَةَ لَمْ أُكَلِّمْكَ أَبَدًا وَكُلُّ مَالٍ لِي فِي رِتَاجِ الْكَعْبَةِ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ إِنَّ الْكَعْبَةَ لَغَنِيَّةٌ عَنْ مَالِكَ كَفِّرْ عَنْ يَمِينِكِ وَكَلِّمْ أَخَاكَ فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «لَا يَمِينَ عَلَيْكَ وَلَا نَذَرَ فِي مَعْصِيَةٍ وَلَا فِي قَطِيعَةِ رَحِمٍ وَلَا فِيمَا لَا تَمْلِكُ»

    ✧ that two brothers from the Ansar had an inheritance between them. One of them asked his companion for the division, and he said: If you ask me again for the division, I will never speak to you, and all my wealth is for the door of the Ka'bah. 'Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ said: The Ka'bah is in no need of your wealth. Expiate your oath and speak to your brother, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: «There is no oath or vow in disobedience, or in severing ties of kinship, or in what you do not own.»

    «إِنَّمَا الْحَلِفُ حَنِثٌ أَوْ نَدَمٌ»

    ✧ An oath is only either a sin or a regret.

    ✧ Do not swear by your fathers, nor by your mothers, nor by the rivals [to Allah], and do not swear except by Allah, and do not swear unless you are truthful.

    كُنْتُ عِنْدَ ابْنِ عُمَرَ فَحَلَفَ رَجُلٌ بِالْكَعْبَةِ فَقَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ وَيْحَكَ لَا تَفْعَلْ فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «مَنْ حَلَفَ بِغَيْرِ اللَّهِ فَقَدْ أَشْرَكَ»

    ✧ I was with Ibn Umar when a man swore by the Ka'bah. Ibn Umar said: Woe to you, do not do that, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Whoever swears by other than Allah has committed shirk."

    أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَدْرَكَ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ وَهُوَ يَحْلِفُ بِأَبِيهِ فَقَالَ «إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَنْهَاكُمْ أَنْ تَحْلِفُوا بِآبَائِكُمْ فَمَنْ كَانَ حَالِفًا فَلْيَحْلِفْ بِاللَّهِ أَوْ لِيَسْكُتْ»

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ caught up with Umar b. al-Khattab while he was swearing by his father, so he said: "Allah forbids you from swearing by your fathers. Whoever swears, let him swear by Allah or remain silent."

    أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَدْرَكَ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ وَهُوَ يَسِيرُ فِي رَكْبٍ وَهُوَ يَحْلِفُ بِأَبِيهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَنْهَاكُمْ أَنْ تَحْلِفُوا بِآبَائِكُمْ فَمَنْ كَانَ حَالِفًا فَلْيَحْلِفْ بِاللَّهِ أَوْ لِيَصْمُتْ»

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ caught up with Umar b. al-Khattab while he was riding in a group and swearing by his father. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Allah forbids you from swearing by your fathers. Whoever swears, let him swear by Allah or be quiet."

    «مَنْ كَانَ حَالِفًا فَلَا يَحْلِفُ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ» وَكَانَتْ قُرَيْشٌ تَحْلِفُ بِآبَائِهَا فَقَالَ «لَا تَحْلِفُوا بِآبَائِكُمْ»

    ✧ "Whoever swears, let him not swear except by Allah." Quraysh used to swear by their fathers, so he said: "Do not swear by your fathers."

    «مَنْ خَبَّبَ زَوْجَةَ امْرِئٍ أَوْ مَمْلُوكَهُ فَلَيْسَ مِنَّا وَمَنْ حَلَفَ بِالْأَمَانَةِ فَلَيْسَ مِنَّا»

    ✧ "Whoever corrupts a man's wife or his slave is not from us, and whoever swears by honesty (al-amānah) is not from us."

    حَلَفْتُ بِاللَّاتِ وَالْعُزَّى فَقَالَ أَصْحَابِي قُلْتَ هُجْرًا فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ الْعَهْدَ كَانَ قَرِيبًا وَحَلَفْتُ بِاللَّاتِ وَالْعُزَّى فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «قُلْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ اتْفُلْ عَنْ يَسَارِكِ ثَلَاثًا وَتَعَوَّذْ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ وَلَا تَعُدْ»

    ✧ I swore by al-Lat and al-Uzza. My companions said: You have spoken an evil word. So I went to the Prophet ﷺ and said: O Messenger of Allah, the covenant was recent, and I swore by al-Lat and al-Uzza. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Say: There is no god but Allah alone, three times, then spit to your left three times, and seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan, and do not repeat it."

    حَلَفْتُ بِاللَّاتِ وَالْعُزَّى فَقَالَ لِي أَصْحَابِي لَقَدْ قُلْتَ هُجْرًا فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ إِنَّ الْعَهْدَ كَانَ حَدِيثًا وَإِنِّي حَلَفْتُ بِاللَّاتِ وَالْعُزَّى فَقَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «قُلْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ ثَلَاثًا وَانْفُثْ عَنْ شِمَالِكَ ثَلَاثًا وَتَعَوَّذْ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ وَلَا تَعُدْ»

    Verily the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: He who took an oath on a religion other than Islam as a liar would become so as he said, and he who slaughtered himself with a thing would be slaughtered with that on the Day of Resurrection. (Using translation from Muslim 110d)

    «مَا شَهِدْتُ مِنْ حِلْفِ قُرَيْشٍ إِلَّا حِلْفَ الْمُطَيَّبِينَ وَمَا أُحِبُّ أَنَّ لِي حُمْرَ النَّعَمِ وَإِنِّي كُنْتُ نَقَضَتْهُ» قَالَ وَالْمُطَيِّبُونَ هَاشِمٌ وَأُمَيَّةُ وَزَهْرَةُ وَمَخْزُومٌ

    ✧ "I did not witness any alliance of Quraysh except the alliance of the perfumed ones, and I would not love to have red camels in exchange for having broken it." He said: "And the perfumed ones are Hashim, Umayyah, Zuhrah, and Makhzum."
