✧ Guests came to stay with us, and my father was talking to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the night. He departed and said: O 'Abd al-Rahman, take care of your guests. When evening came, we brought them their hospitality, but they refused and said: Not until your father comes to his house and eats with us. I said: He is a stern man, and if you do not do so, I fear that some harm may befall me from him. They refused. When he came, he said: Have you finished with your guests? They said: No, by Allah. He said: Did I not command 'Abd al-Rahman? I moved aside, and he said: I adjure you, if you can hear my voice, come. So I came and said: By Allah, I have no fault; these are your guests, so ask them. I brought them their hospitality, but they refused to eat until you came. He said: What is wrong with you that you do not accept our hospitality from us? Abu Bakr said: By Allah, I will not eat it tonight. They said: By Allah, we will not eat it until you eat it. He said: I have not seen evil like tonight. Then he said: As for the first, it is from Satan, so bring your hospitality. The food was brought, and he invoked the name of Allah and ate, and they ate. When morning came, he went to the Prophet ﷺ and said: O Messenger of Allah, they were righteous and I broke my oath. He said: «Rather, you are the most righteous of them and the best of them.»
