✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Dihya al-Kalbi to Caesar, and wrote with him a letter giving him the choice of one of three things: either to submit and keep the kingship in his hands, or to pay the tribute, or to give permission for war. He said: Caesar gathered his patricians and priests in his palace, locked the door upon them, and said: Muhammad has written to me giving me the choice of one of three things: either to submit and keep the kingship in my hands, or to pay the tribute, or to give permission for war. You will find in what you read of your scriptures that he will possess what is under my feet of my kingdom. They snorted a snort until some of them came out of their cowls, and said: Will you send to a man of the Arabs, who has come in his two cloaks and his two sandals, regarding the tribute? He said: Be quiet. I only wanted to know your adherence to your religion and your desire for it. Then he said: Seek for me a man of the Arabs. They brought me, and he wrote with me a letter to the Prophet ﷺ, and said to me: Look at what escapes you of his speech, so let nothing escape you at the mention of the night and the day. I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was with his companions, and they were sitting with their sword belts wrapped around them at the well of Tabuk. I said: Which of you is Muhammad? He pointed with his hand to himself. I handed him the letter, and he gave it to a man beside him. I said: Who is this? They said: Mu'awiya b. Abi Sufyan. He read it, and in it was: You have written calling me to a Paradise whose width is the heavens and the earth; so where is the Fire then? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Glory be to Allah! When night comes, where is the day? I wrote it down with me. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: You are the messenger of a people, and you have a right, but you have come to us while we are destitute. 'Uthman said: I will clothe him with a Saffuri robe. A man of the Ansar said: I will host him. And Caesar said to me in what he said: Look at his back. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw that I wanted to look at his back, so he cast his garment off his back. I looked at the seal in the cartilage of the shoulder, and I came to him and kissed it. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I wrote to the Negus, and he burned my letter; Allah will burn him. I wrote to Chosroes, the great one of Persia, and he tore my letter; Allah will tear him. I wrote to Caesar, and he raised my letter, so people will not cease – he mentioned a word – as long as there is good in life.
