✧ The messenger of Caesar was a neighbor of mine during the time of Yazid b. Mu'awiyah. I said to him: 'Tell me about the letter of the Messenger of God ﷺ to Caesar.' He said: 'The Messenger of God ﷺ sent Dihyah al-Kalbi to Caesar, and he sent with him a letter to him' — and he mentioned something like the hadith of 'Abbad b. 'Abbad, and the hadith of 'Abbad is more complete and better in its narration of the story, and he added — he said: 'The Messenger of God ﷺ laughed when he invited him to Islam, and he refused to become Muslim, and he recited this verse: "Indeed, you do not guide whom you love, but God guides whom He wills." Then the Messenger of God ﷺ said: "You are a messenger of a people, and you have a right, but you came to us while we were without provisions." 'Uthman b. 'Affan said: "I will clothe him in a Saffuri robe." And a man from the Ansar said: "His hospitality is upon me."
