✧ Ma'iz b. Malik came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: “O Messenger of God, I have incurred a prescribed punishment, so carry it out on me.” He said: The Prophet ﷺ turned him away three times, or perhaps four times. Then he asked about him: “Is there anything wrong with him?” They said: “No, O Messenger of God, except that he has incurred a prescribed punishment and does not think anything can release him from it but the punishment.” He said: The Prophet ﷺ gave the order, and we took him to Baqi' al-Gharqad. We did not dig a grave for him nor tie him up. We threw at him pieces of pottery and bones. That distressed him, so he ran to the harrah, and we followed him and threw at him the hard stones of the harrah until he fell silent. Then the Prophet ﷺ stood as a preacher and said: “When we go out in the path of God, one of them stays behind and has a bleating like the bleating of a he-goat. Indeed, if anyone of those is brought to me, I will make an example of him.” He said: He claimed, but he did not curse him or ask forgiveness for him.
