«أَتَخَافَانِ أَنْ تَكُونَا حَمَّلْتُمَا الْأَرْضَ مَا لَا تُطِيقُ؟ » قَالَا حَمَّلْنَاهَا أَمْرًا هِيَ لَهُ مُطِيقَةٌ وَمَا فِيهَا كَثِيرُ فَضْلٍ فَقَالَ «انْظُرَا أَنْ لَا تَكُونَا حَمَّلْتُمَا ✧ Umar said, 'Do you two fear that you have loaded the earth with what it cannot bear?' They said, 'We have loaded it with a matter it is capable of, and there is not much surplus in it.' He said, 'Consider that you have not loaded the earth with what it cannot bear.' They said, 'No.' He said, 'If Allah grants me safety, I will leave the widows of Iraq not needing anyone after me.' He said, and only four nights passed before he was struck. Amr b. Maymun said: I was standing between him and nothing but Abdullah b. Abbas on the morning he was struck. When he passed between the two rows, he stood between them, and if he saw a gap, he said, 'Straighten up,' until he saw no gap among them, then he advanced and said the takbir. He said, sometimes he would recite Surah Yusuf or al-Nahl in the first rak'ah until the people gathered. He said, no sooner had he said the takbir than I heard him say, 'The dog has killed me,' or 'The dog has eaten me,' when the non-Arab struck him with a double-edged knife. He did not pass by anyone to the right or left without stabbing him, until he had stabbed thirteen men, of whom nine died. When a Muslim man saw that, he threw a burnous over him. When the non-Arab realized he was captured, he slit his own throat. Umar took the hand of Abd al-Rahman b. Awf and brought him forward. Those near Umar saw what I saw, but the people in the far parts of the mosque did not know what was happening, except that they missed Umar's voice, and they were saying, 'Glory be to Allah, glory be to Allah.' Abd al-Rahman led the people in a brief prayer. When they finished, Umar said, 'O Ibn Abbas, see who killed me.' He went around for a while, then said, 'The slave of al-Mughira b. Shu'ba.' He said, 'May Allah fight him! I had commanded him to do good.' Then he said, 'Praise be to Allah who did not make my death at the hand of a man who claims Islam. You and your father used to love that the non-Arabs increase in Madinah.' Al-Abbas had the most slaves among them. He was carried to his house. It was as if the people had never been afflicted with a calamity before that day. One said, 'We fear for him,' and another said, 'No harm.' Nabidh was brought to him, and he drank some, and it came out of his wound. Then milk was brought, and he drank some, and it came out of his wound. They knew he was dying. We entered upon him, and people came praising him. A young man came and said, 'Rejoice, O Commander of the Believers, with the good news of Allah. You have the companionship of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and precedence in Islam as you know. Then you were made caliph and you were just. Then martyrdom.' He said, 'O my nephew, I wish that this were just enough, neither against me nor for me.' When the man turned away, his waist-wrapper was touching the ground. He said, 'Bring the boy back to me.' He said, 'O my nephew, raise your garment, for it is cleaner for your garment and more fearful of your Lord. O Abdullah, see what debt I owe.' They calculated it and found it to be eighty-six thousand. He said, 'If the wealth of the family of Umar suffices, pay it from their wealth. Otherwise, ask among Banu Adi b. Ka'b. If their wealth does not suffice, ask among Quraysh, and do not go beyond them to others. Go to the Mother of the Believers Aisha and say to her: Umar b. al-Khattab sends you greetings of peace. Do not say Commander of the Believers, for I am not the commander of the believers. Say: Umar b. al-Khattab asks permission to be buried with his two companions.' Abdullah greeted and asked permission, and found her weeping. He said to her, 'Umar b. al-Khattab asks permission to be buried with his two companions.' She said, 'By Allah, I had wanted it for myself, but today I will prefer him over myself.' He came back. When he approached, it was said, 'This is Abdullah, he has come.' He said, 'Lift me up.' A man supported him, and he said, 'What did she say?' He said, 'What you love, O Commander of the Believers. She has permitted you.' He said, 'Praise be to Allah. Nothing was more important to me than that resting place. When I die, greet and say: Umar b. al-Khattab asks permission. If she permits me, bring me in; if she refuses, take me to the graveyard of the Muslims.' Then the Mother of the Believers Hafsa came with women, and they were veiling her. When we saw her, we stood up. She stayed with him for a while, then the men asked permission and she entered inside. Then we heard her weeping from inside. It was said to him, 'Give instructions, O Commander of the Believers. Appoint a successor.' He said, 'I see no one more entitled to this affair than these men with whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died while he was pleased with them.' He named Ali, Talha, Uthman, al-Zubayr, Abd al-Rahman b. Awf, and Sa'd ؓ. He said, 'Let Abdullah b. Umar be present, but he has no part in the affair, as a form of consolation for him. If Sa'd attains the affair, then that is it; otherwise, let whoever among you is appointed seek his help, for I have not removed him due to incapacity or treachery.' Then he said, 'I enjoin the caliph after me to fear Allah. I enjoin him concerning the early Muhajirun: to recognize their due and preserve their sanctity. I enjoin him concerning the Ansar, who had settled in the abode and embraced faith before them, to accept from their good-doers and overlook their wrongdoers. I enjoin him concerning the people of the garrison towns: they are the support of Islam, the collectors of wealth, and the vexation of the enemy. Let nothing be taken from them except their surplus with their consent. I enjoin him concerning the Bedouins: they are the origin of the Arabs and the substance of Islam. Let their wealth be taken from their surplus and returned to their poor. I enjoin him concerning the covenant of Allah and the covenant of His Messenger ﷺ: to fulfill their treaty, to fight for them, and not to burden them beyond their capacity.' When he died, ؓ, we went out with him walking. Abdullah b. Umar greeted and said, 'Umar asks permission.' She said, 'Bring him in.' He was brought in and placed there with his two companions. When the burial was finished and they returned, those men gathered. Abd al-Rahman b. Awf said, 'Entrust your affair to three of you.' Al-Zubayr said, 'I entrust my affair to Ali.' Sa'd said, 'I entrust my affair to Abd al-Rahman.' Talha said, 'I entrust my affair to Uthman.' So these three came: Ali, Uthman, and Abd al-Rahman b. Awf. Abd al-Rahman said to the other two, 'Which of you will withdraw from this affair and entrust it to him, with Allah and Islam as witness, that he will look for the best among them in his own judgment and strive for the welfare of the community?' He said, the two elders, Ali and Uthman, remained silent. Abd al-Rahman said, 'Entrust it to me, and Allah is my witness that I will not fail to choose the best of you.' They said, 'Yes.' He brought Ali and said, 'You have precedence, early Islam, and kinship as you know. By Allah, if I appoint you, will you be just, and if I appoint over you, will you listen and obey?' Then he brought Uthman and said the same to him. When he had taken the pledge, he said to Uthman, 'Raise your hand.' He gave him the oath of allegiance, then Ali gave him the oath of allegiance, then the people of the house entered and gave him the oath of allegiance.
