✧ Al-Ashʿarī sought permission to enter upon ʿUmar three times, but he did not grant him permission, so he turned back. ʿUmar sent to him, "What made you go back?" He said, "I sought permission three times and was not granted permission, and I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say, 'If one seeking permission asks three times and is not granted permission, let him go back.'" ʿUmar said, "You must bring me someone who knows this, or I will do such-and-such to you." Abū Saʿīd said, "Al-Ashʿarī came to me trembling, his face turned yellow. He stood at a circle of the Prophet's ﷺ companions and said, 'I adjure by God, any man who knows anything about this must stand up for it, for I fear this man for myself.' I said, 'I am with you.' Another said, 'And I am with you.' So he was relieved."
