✧ Al-Ashʿarī prayed with his companions. When he sat in his prayer, a man behind him said, "Prayer has been coupled with righteousness and zakāh." When al-Ashʿarī finished his prayer, he said, "Which of you said such-and-such words?" The people remained silent. He said, "O Ḥiṭṭān, perhaps you said it." I said, "I did not say it, but I feared you would rebuke me for it." Al-Ashʿarī said, "Do you not know what you say in your prayer? The Messenger of God ﷺ addressed us and taught us our Sunnah and explained to us our prayer. He said: 'Straighten your rows, then let one of you lead you. When the imām says takbīr, say takbīr. When he says "wa-lā al-ḍāllīn," say "āmīn," and God will answer you. When he bows, bow, for the imām bows before you and rises before you.' The Prophet of God ﷺ said, 'That is for that.' When he says, 'Samiʿa Allāhu li-man ḥamidah,' say, 'Allāhumma Rabbanā laka al-ḥamd,' and God will hear you, for God, Mighty and Majestic, said on the tongue of His Prophet ﷺ, 'Samiʿa Allāhu li-man ḥamidah.' When he says takbīr and prostrates, say takbīr and prostrate, for the imām prostrates before you and rises before you.' The Prophet of God ﷺ said, 'That is for that.' When it is time for the sitting, let the first thing one of you says be: 'Al-taḥiyyātu li-llāhi, al-ṭayyibātu al-ṣalawātu li-llāhi, al-salāmu ʿalayka ayyuhā al-nabiyyu wa-raḥmatu Allāhi, al-salāmu ʿalaynā wa-ʿalā ʿibādi Allāhi al-ṣāliḥīn, ashhadu an lā ilāha illā Allāhu wa-anna Muḥammadan ʿabduhu wa-rasūluhu.'"
