✧ It became dark once while we were on a journey, and the qiblah was unclear to us, so each man among us prayed in the direction he faced. When it cleared, some of us had prayed away from the qiblah and some had prayed toward it. We mentioned that to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he said: 'Your prayer has been accepted,' and the verse was revealed: 'Wherever you turn, there is the face of God.'

What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Ibn al-Qaṭṭān

machine translationThe hadith is defective (maʿlūl) because of Ashʿath and ʿĀṣim. Ashʿath is inconsistent in hadith (muḍṭarib al-ḥadīth), and hadiths are criticised as reprehensible (munkar) from him. Ashʿath al-Sammān is poor in memorisation (sayyiʾ al-ḥifẓ) and narrates reprehensible reports (munkarāt) from the trustworthy (thiqāt).

    in مسند الطيالسي, p. 1243
  • Shawkānī

machine translationAlthough this hadith is open to criticism among the hadith scholars, it has corroborating supports (shawāhid) that strengthen it.

    in مسند الطيالسي, p. 1243
  • Ibn Kathīr

machine translationThere is weakness in these chains of transmission, but perhaps some of them strengthen others.

    in مسند الطيالسي, p. 1243

machine translationIt is not narrated through any route that is established.
