So each man among us placed stones in front of him and prayed toward them. When morning came, we found that we had been facing a direction other than the qiblah. So we mentioned that to the Prophet ﷺ.

What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Ibn al-Qaṭṭān

الحديث معلول بأشعث وعاصم فأشعث مضطرب الحديث ينكر عليه أحاديث وأشعث السمان سيئ الحفظ يروي المنكرات عن الثقات

machine translationThe hadith is defective (maʿlūl) because of Ashʿath and ʿĀṣim. Ashʿath is inconsistent in hadith (muḍṭarib al-ḥadīth), and hadiths are criticised as reprehensible (munkar) from him. Ashʿath al-Sammān is poor in memorisation (sayyiʾ al-ḥifẓ) and narrates reprehensible reports (munkarāt) from the trustworthy (thiqāt).

    in سنن الدارقطني, p. 1065
  • Shawkānī

هذا الحديث وإن كان فيه مقال عند المحدثين ولكن له شواهد تقويه

machine translationAlthough this hadith is open to criticism among the hadith scholars, it has corroborating supports (shawāhid) that strengthen it.

    in سنن الدارقطني, p. 1065
  • Ibn Kathīr

هذه الأسانيد فيها ضعف ولعله يشد بعضها بعضا

machine translationThere is weakness in these chains of transmission, but perhaps some of them strengthen others.

  • العقيلي

    لا يروى من وجه يثبت

machine translationIt is not narrated through any route that is established.
