✧ Salman al-Farisi came to me to greet me, wearing a Qatwani cloak wrapped around himself. I threw him a cushion, but he did not return it and instead rolled up his cloak and sat on it. He said: “It suffices you what you have attained of position.” Then he praised God for a while, said “God is greater,” and invoked blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ. Then he said: “Where is your companion?”—meaning Abu al-Darda’. I said: “He is in the mosque.” So he went to him, and then they both came back. Abu al-Darda’ had bought meat for a dirham, and it was in his hand, hanging. He said: “O Umm al-Darda’, bake and cook.” So we did. Then we brought the food to Salman. Abu al-Darda’ said: “Eat with Umm al-Darda’, for I am fasting.” Salman said: “I will not eat until you eat.” So Abu al-Darda’ broke his fast and ate with him. When the hour came in which Abu al-Darda’ used to stand (in prayer), he went to stand, but Salman made him sit. Abu al-Darda’ said: “Do you forbid me from worshipping my Lord?” Salman said: “Your eye has a right over you, and your family has a share over you.” So he prevented him until it was near dawn. Then they stood and prayed some rak’ahs and performed witr, then went out to the morning prayer. They mentioned their situation to the Prophet ﷺ, and he said: “What is with Salman, may his mother be bereaved of him? He has indeed been filled with knowledge.”
