حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَعْدَانَ الْعَتَايِدِيُّ الشِّيرَازِيُّ، حَدَّثَنِي زَيْدُ بْنُ أَخْزَمَ، نَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ، عَنْ أَشْعَثَ، عَنْ عَوْفٍ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ الْفَارِسِيِّ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ:
قُلْتُ لِعُثْمَانَ: يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، مَا حَمَلَكُمْ عَلَى أَنْ جَعَلْتُمْ بَرَاءَةً مِنَ الْمِئِينَ وَالْأَنْفَالَ مِنَ الْمَثَانِي، فَقَرَنْتُمُوهُمَا وَجَعَلْتُمُوهُمَا فِي السَّبْعِ الطِّوَالِ، وَلَمْ تَكْتُبُوا بَيْنَهُمَا: بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ ؟ فَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ: إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ مِمَّا يَنْزِلُ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ السُّوَرِ ذَوَاتُ الْعَدَدِ، فَكَانَ إِذَا أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ الْآيَةُ قَالَ لِبَعْضِ مَنْ يَكْتُبُ: اجْعَلُوا هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ فِي سُورَةِ كَذَا وَكَذَا، وَإِنَّ الْأَنْفَالَ مِنْ أَوَّلِ مَا أُنْزِلَ بِالْمَدِينَةِ، وَكَانَتْ بَرَاءَةٌ آخِرَ الْقُرْآنِ، فَمَاتَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَلَمْ يُبَيِّنْ لَنَا، وَرَأَيْتُ قِصَّتَهَا تُشْبِهُ قِصَّتَهَا، فَلِذَلِكَ ضَمَمْتُهَمَا مَعًا، وَلَمْ أَكْتُبْ بَيْنَهُمَا: بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ

✧ I said to ‘Uthman: “O Commander of the Believers, what made you place Bara’ah among the Mi’in and al-Anfal among the Mathani, joining them together and placing them in the Seven Long Surahs, without writing ‘In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful’ between them?” ‘Uthman said: “The Messenger of God ﷺ, among what was revealed to him of surahs, there were those of multiple verses. When a verse was revealed to him, he would say to one of those who wrote: ‘Place this verse in such-and-such surah.’ Al-Anfal was among the first to be revealed in Madinah, and Bara’ah was the last of the Qur’an. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ died without clarifying it for us. I saw that their story resembles her story, so for that reason I joined them together and did not write ‘In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful’ between them.”
