✧ I saw al-Hajjaj beating 'Abbas b. Sahl during the governorship of Ibn al-Zubayr ؓ. Sahl b. Sa'd ؓ came to him, an old man with two braids, wearing two garments: an izar and a rida'. He stood before the two rows and said: 'O Hajjaj, do you not preserve among us the bequest of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' He said: 'What did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ enjoin regarding you?' He said: 'To be good to the good-doers of the Ansar and to pardon their wrongdoers.' So he released him.
