حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى الْحُلْوَانِيُّ قَالَ: نَا مُصْعَبُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الزُّبَيْرِيُّ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، عَنْ قُدَامَةَ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ حَاطِبٍ الْجُمَحِيِّ. قَالَ:

حَضَرْتُ الْحَجَّاجَ بْنَ يُوسُفَ يَضْرِبُ الْعَبَّاسَ بْنَ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ السَّاعِدِيَّ فِي أَمْرِ ابْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ، فَطَلَعَ أَبُوهُ سَهْلٌ فِي إِزَارٍ وَرِدَاءٍ، فَصَاحَ بِالْحَجَّاجِ: أَلَا تَحْفَظُ فِينَا وَصِيَّةَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ؟ فَقَالَ: وَمَا أَوْصَى رَسُولُ اللهِ فِيكُمْ ؟ قَالَ: أَوْصَى: أَنْ " يُحْسَنَ إِلَى مُحْسِنِ الْأَنْصَارِ، وَيُعْفَى عَنْ مُسِيئِهِمْ فَأَرْسَلَهُ

✧ I was present when al-Hajjaj b. Yusuf was beating al-'Abbas b. Sahl b. Sa'd al-Sa'idi regarding the matter of Ibn al-Zubayr. His father Sahl came out in a waist-wrapper and a cloak, and shouted at al-Hajjaj: "Will you not honor the bequest of the Messenger of Allah concerning us?" He said: "And what did the Messenger of Allah bequeath concerning you?" He said: "He bequeathed: 'Treat well the good-doers among the Ansar and pardon their wrongdoers.'" So he released him.
