✧ Go and send them back. I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, my mount has become exhausted.' He ﷺ said, 'O brother of Suda', you are obeyed among your people.' I said, 'Rather, Allah, the Exalted, guided them through you to Islam.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, 'Shall I not appoint you over them?' I said, 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wrote a document for me and appointed me. I said, 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, order for me something from their sadaqat.' So he ﷺ wrote another document for me. Al-Suda'i ؓ said: That was during one of his journeys. He ﷺ stopped at a place, and the people of that place came to him complaining about their governor, saying, 'O Messenger of Allah, he seized us for something that was between him and his people in the Jahiliyyah.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Did he do that?' They said, 'Yes.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned to his companions, and I was among them, and said, 'There is no good in leadership for a believing man.' Al-Suda'i ؓ said: His ﷺ words entered my heart. Then another man came to him ﷺ and asked him, saying, 'O Messenger of Allah, give me.' He ﷺ said, 'Whoever asks people while he is self-sufficient, it is a headache in the head and a disease in the belly.' The man said, 'Give me from the sadaqat.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Allah, Mighty and Majestic, did not accept in it the judgment of a prophet or anyone else until He judged in it Himself and divided it. If you are from those parts, I will give you - or we will give you your due.' Al-Suda'i ؓ said: That entered my heart, that I had asked him while I was self-sufficient. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ traveled with us from the beginning of the night. I kept close to him - and I was strong - and his companions ؓ would fall behind him and lag, until no one remained with him except me. When it was time for the morning adhan, he ﷺ commanded me, and I called the adhan. I kept saying, 'Shall I call the iqamah, O Messenger of Allah?' He ﷺ would look toward the east at the dawn and say, 'No.' When the dawn broke, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ dismounted and went to relieve himself. Then he returned to me, and his companions ؓ had caught up with him. He ﷺ said, 'Is there any water, O brother of Suda'?' I said, 'No, except a little that is not enough for you.' He ﷺ said, 'Put it in a vessel, then bring it to me.' I did so, and he placed his palm ﷺ in the vessel. I saw between every two of his fingers ﷺ a spring gushing forth. He said, 'O brother of Suda', if I were not ashamed before my Lord, Mighty and Majestic, we would have drunk and given drink. Call out to my companions: Whoever has a need for water, let him take it.' I called out, and those who wanted took some. Then he ﷺ stood for prayer. Bilal ؓ wanted to call the iqamah, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'The brother of Suda' called the adhan, so he will call the iqamah.' Al-Suda'i ؓ said: I called the iqamah. When he ﷺ finished the prayer, I brought him the two documents and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, excuse me from these two documents.' He ﷺ said, 'What has appeared to you?' I said, 'I heard you, O Prophet of Allah, say: There is no good in leadership for a believing man, and I believe in Allah and His Messenger. And I heard you say to the beggar: Whoever asks people while he is self-sufficient, it is a headache in the head and a disease in the belly, and I asked you while I was self-sufficient.' He ﷺ said, 'That is it. If you wish, accept, and if you wish, leave.' I said, 'Rather, I leave.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, 'Guide me to a man whom I can appoint over you.' I guided him to a man from the delegation who had come to him, and he appointed him over us. Then I said, 'O Prophet of Allah, we have a well. In winter, its water suffices us and we gather around it, but in summer its water decreases, so we disperse to other waters around us. We have embraced Islam, and all those around us are enemies. So pray to Allah, the Exalted, for us regarding our well, that its water may suffice us and we may gather around it and not disperse.' He called for six pebbles, rubbed them in his hand, and supplicated over them. Then he ﷺ said, 'Go with these pebbles, and when you come to the well, throw them in one by one, and mention the name of Allah, the Exalted.' Al-Suda'i ؓ said: We did so, and he said: After that, we could not see its bottom. Ahmad and Abu Dawud narrated part of it separately.
