✧ When 'Perish the hands of Abu Lahab, and perish he' was revealed, the one-eyed Umm Jamil bint Harb came, wailing, with a stone in her hand, saying: 'We reject Muzammam, we hate his religion, we disobey his command.' The Messenger of God ﷺ was sitting in the mosque, reciting Qur'an, and Abu Bakr ؓ was with him. He said: 'O Messenger of God, she is coming, and I fear she may see you.' He ﷺ said: 'She will not see me,' and he ﷺ recited Qur'an, seeking protection through it, as God, Mighty and Majestic, said: 'And when you recite the Qur'an, We place between you and those who do not believe in the Hereafter a hidden barrier.' She came and stood by Abu Bakr ؓ, and did not see the Messenger of God ﷺ. She said: 'O Abu Bakr, I have been told that your companion has satirized me.' He ؓ said: 'No, by the Lord of this House, he has not satirized you.' She turned away, saying: 'Quraysh knows that I am the daughter of its chief.' He said: Al-Walid said in his hadith, or someone else said: 'Umm Jamil stumbled while circumambulating the House in her cloak, and she said: 'May Muzammam perish.' Umm Hakim bint 'Abd al-Muttalib said: 'I am chaste, so I am not spoken to; I am knowledgeable, so I am not taught; we are both from the cousins, and Quraysh after him knows best.'
