✧ A man said to Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ: I know the most severe verse in the Book of Allah, Exalted is He. Umar ؓ raised his hand and struck him with a whip and said: Why did you search for it until you knew it? The man left. The next day, Umar ؓ said to him: The verse you mentioned yesterday? He said: Did you let me tell you about it? Umar ؓ said to him: I did not sleep last night. He said: O Commander of the Faithful, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: Whoever does evil will be recompensed for it, the verse. None of us does evil except he is recompensed for it. Umar ؓ said to him: When it was revealed, neither food nor drink benefited us until Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, sent down after that and gave concession. He said: And whoever does evil or wrongs himself, then seeks forgiveness of Allah, he will find Allah Forgiving, Merciful.
