✧ Al-Miqdad b. al-Aswad ؓ went out on a military expedition, and they passed by a group of polytheists. They fled, but one man stayed with his family and property and said: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah. Al-Miqdad ؓ killed him. It was said to him: 'You killed him while he testified that there is no god but Allah?' He said: He wished he could have fled with his family and property. They said: This is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so ask him. They came to him and mentioned that to him. He ﷺ said: 'You killed him while he testified that there is no god but Allah?' He said: O Messenger of Allah, he wished he could have fled with his property and family. He said: Then this verse was revealed: O you who believe, when you go forth in the path of Allah, then be discerning, up to His saying: Thus you were before.
