✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ delivered a sermon to us, and he mentioned the hadith in full. He said: Then he ﷺ descended, and a group of the Ansar ؓ hastened to him before he came down from the pulpit and said: “May our lives be your ransom, O Messenger of Allah. Who can bear these hardships, and how can one live after this day?” He ﷺ said to them: “And you, may my father and mother be your ransom. I entreated my Lord, Blessed and Exalted, concerning my community, and He said to me: ‘The gate of repentance is open until the trumpet is blown.’” Then he ﷺ said: “Whoever repents one year before his death, Allah will turn to him.” Then he ﷺ said: “A year is a long time. Whoever repents one month before his death, Allah will turn to him.” Then he ﷺ said: “A month is a long time. Whoever repents one week before his death, Allah will turn to him.” Then he ﷺ said: “A week is a long time. Whoever repents one day before his death, Allah will turn to him.” Then he ﷺ said: “A day is a long time. Whoever repents one hour before his death, Allah will turn to him.” Then he ﷺ said: “Whoever repents before he gargles with death, Allah will turn to him.” Then he ﷺ descended, and it was the last sermon he delivered.
