✧ I was sitting with 'Umar ؓ when a man from 'Abd al-Qays whose residence was in al-Sus was brought to him. 'Umar ؓ said to him: "Are you so-and-so son of so-and-so, the 'Abdi?" He said: "Yes." He struck him with a stick he had. The man said: "What is my fault, O Commander of the Faithful?" 'Umar ؓ said to him: "Sit down." He sat down. Then he recited to him: "In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Alif Lam Ra. These are the verses of the clear Book. Indeed, We have sent it down as an Arabic Quran so that you may understand. We relate to you the best of stories..." He recited it to him three times and struck him three times. The man said: "What is my fault, O Commander of the Faithful?" He said: "Are you the one who copied the Book of Daniel?" He said: "Command me with your command and I will follow it." He ؓ said: "Go and erase it with hot water and white wool. Then do not read it yourself, nor teach it to anyone among the Muslims. If it reaches me that you have read it or taught it to any Muslim, I will destroy you as a punishment." Then he ؓ said to him: "Sit down." He sat before him. He said: "I went and copied a book from the People of the Book, then brought it in a piece of leather. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to me: 'What is this in your hand, O 'Umar?' I said: 'O Messenger of God, a book I copied to add knowledge to our knowledge.' The Messenger of God ﷺ became angry until his eyes reddened. Then the call to prayer was made: 'Gather for prayer.' The Ansar said: 'Your Prophet has been angered! To arms! To arms!' They came and surrounded the pulpit of the Messenger of God ﷺ. He said: 'I brought it to you white and pure, so do not be confused, and let not the confused deceive you.' 'Umar ؓ said: 'I stood up and said: I am content with God as Lord, with Islam as religion, and with you as Messenger.' Then the Messenger of God ﷺ descended."
