✧ The question of the People of the Book

أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ أَبِي قِلَابَةَ،
أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ مَرَّ بِرَجُلٍ يَقْرَأُ كِتَابًا سَمِعَهُ سَاعَةً فَاسْتَحْسَنَهُ، فَقَالَ لِلرَّجُلِ: أَتَكْتُبُ مِنْ هَذَا الْكِتَابِ ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، فَاشْتَرَى أَدِيمًا لِنَفْسِهِ، ثُمَّ جَاءَ بِهِ إِلَيْهِ فَنَسَخَهُ فِي بَطْنِهِ وَظَهْرِهِ. ثُمَّ أَتَى بِهِ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ، فَجَعَلَ يَقْرَأُهُ عَلَيْهِ، وَجَعَلَ وَجْهُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ يَتَلَوَّنُ، فَضَرَبَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ بِيَدِهِ الْكِتَابَ، وَقَالَ: ثَكِلَتْكَ أُمُّكَ يَا ابْنَ الْخَطَّابِ ! أَلَا تَرَى إِلَى وَجْهِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مُنْذُ الْيَوْمِ وَأَنْتَ تَقْرَأُ هَذَا الْكِتَابَ ؟ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عِنْدَ ذَلِكَ: إِنَّمَا بُعِثْتُ فَاتِحًا وَخَاتِمًا، وَأُعْطِيتُ جَوَامِعَ الْكَلِمِ وَفَوَاتِحَهُ، وَاخْتُصِرَ لِي الْحَدِيثُ اخْتِصَارًا، فَلَا يُهْلِكَنَّكُمُ الْمُتَهَوِّكُونَ
Translation
✧ Umar b. al-Khattab passed by a man reading a book. He listened for a while and admired it. He said to the man, "Do you copy from this book?" He said, "Yes." So he bought a hide for himself, then brought it to him and copied it on both sides. Then he brought it to the Prophet ﷺ and began reading it to him. The face of the Messenger of God ﷺ began to change color. A man from the Ansar struck the book with his hand and said, "May your mother be bereaved, O Ibn al-Khattab! Do you not see the face of the Messenger of God ﷺ all day while you read this book?" The Prophet ﷺ said then, "I was sent only as an opener and a seal. I was given the comprehensive words and their beginnings, and speech was made concise for me. So let not the confused ones destroy you."
