✧ I went out to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while Abu Bakr and Umar ؓ were sitting, and there was a small boy crying. The Prophet ﷺ said to Umar ؓ: 'Hold the child close to you, for he is lost.' So Umar ؓ held him close. While we were sitting, a woman came wailing, I think, saying: 'Oh my son!' and crying. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Call the woman, for she is the mother of the child, and she has uncovered her head; there is no veil on her head, out of grief for her son.' She came and took the child from Umar's lap while crying, and the child was in her lap. She turned, and when she saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, she said: 'Oh, what disgrace! Do I not see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said then: 'Do you see this woman as merciful to her child?' His companions ؓ said: 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ; this is enough mercy.' He ﷺ said: 'By the One in whose hand is my soul, Allah the Exalted is more merciful to the believers than this woman is to her child.'
