✧ ʿAṭṭāf b. Wadāʿa al-Hilālī came to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and the Messenger of God ﷺ said to him, "O ʿAṭṭāf, do you have a wife?" He said, "No." He said, "Nor a slave girl?" He said, "No." He ﷺ said, "And you are healthy and wealthy?" He said, "Yes, praise be to God." He ﷺ said, "Then you are one of the brothers of the devils. Either you are of the monasticism of the Christians, in which case you are one of them, or you are one of us, so do as we do. For part of our Sunnah is marriage. The worst of you are your unmarried, and the most wretched of your dead are your unmarried. Truly, the devil has no weapon more effective against the righteous among men than women, except for the married. Those are the purified, the innocent of indecency. Woe to you, O ʿAṭṭāf! They are the companions of Dāwūd, the companions of Ayyūb, the companions of Yūsuf, and the companions of Kursuf..." and he mentioned the rest of the hadith. "Woe to you, O ʿAṭṭāf! Marry, for you will be among those increased." He said, "O Messenger of God, I will not marry until you marry me to whomever you wish." So the Messenger of God ﷺ said, "I have married you, in the name of God Almighty and by His blessing, to Karīma bt. Kulthūm al-Ḥimyarī."
