✧ ʿUtba b. Farqad offered his son marriage, but he refused. He mentioned that to ʿUthmān ؓ, and ʿUthmān ؓ said to him, "Did not the Prophet ﷺ marry, and Abū Bakr ؓ married, and ʿUmar ؓ married, and we have from them what we have?" He said, "O Commander of the Faithful, who has deeds like the deeds of the Prophet ﷺ, and Abū Bakr and ʿUmar ؓ, or like your deeds?" When he said "like your deeds," he said, "Enough! If you wish, marry; and if you wish, do not."
