✧ I was sitting with the Messenger of God ﷺ in the mosque of al-Khayf, when a man from the Ansar and a man from Thaqif came to him. When they had greeted him, they said: 'We have come to you, O Messenger of God, to ask you.' He ﷺ said: 'If you wish, I will tell you what you are asking me about, and if you wish I will remain silent and you ask me.' They said: 'Tell us, O Messenger of God, so that we may increase in faith or increase in certainty—Ismail was unsure. The Ansari said to the Thaqafi: 'Ask.' He said: 'No, you ask him, for I acknowledge your right, so ask him.' The Ansari said: 'Tell us, O Messenger of God.' He ﷺ said: 'You have come to ask me about your departure from your house heading for the Sacred House, and what you will have for it; about your circumambulation of the House, and what you will have for it; about your two rak'ahs after the circumambulation, and what you will have for them; about your going between al-Safa and al-Marwah, and what you will have for it; about your standing at Arafah, and what you will have for it; about your stoning of the Jamarat, and what you will have for it; about your sacrifice, and what you will have for it; about shaving your head, and what you will have for it; and about your circumambulation after that, and what you will have for it.' He said: 'By the One who sent you with the truth, it was about this that I came to ask you.' He ﷺ said: 'When you leave your house heading for the Sacred House, your camel does not place a foot nor lift it except that God Almighty writes for you a good deed, wipes out a sin, and raises you a degree. As for your circumambulation of the House, and your two rak'ahs after the circumambulation, they are like freeing a slave from the descendants of Ishmael. As for your going between al-Safa and al-Marwah, it is like freeing seventy slaves. As for your standing on the evening of Arafah, God Almighty descends to the lowest heaven and boasts of you to the angels, saying: 'These are My servants who have come to Me with disheveled hair and covered in dust from every deep valley, hoping for My mercy and forgiveness. If your sins were as numerous as the grains of sand or the foam of the sea, I would forgive them. Depart, My servants, forgiven, and for those you intercede for.' As for your stoning of the Jamarat, for every pebble you throw, a major sin from the destructive, obligatory sins is removed. As for your sacrifice, it is stored for you with your Lord. As for shaving your head, for every hair you shave, a good deed is recorded and a sin is wiped out.' He said: 'O Messenger of God, what if the sins are fewer than that?' He said: 'Then it will be stored for you among your good deeds. As for your circumambulation of the House after that, you will circumambulate while you have no sin. An angel will come and place his hand between your shoulders, then say: 'Work for what is to come, for what has passed has been forgiven you.'
