✧ I heard Abu Humayd al-Sa'idi say in the presence of ten of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, one of whom was Abu Qatadah: 'I am the most knowledgeable of you about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' They said: 'Why? You were not the most frequent of us in following him, nor the earliest of us in his company.' He said: 'Yes, I was.' They said: 'Then present it.' He said: 'When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood for prayer, he raised his hands until they were level with his shoulders, then he said the takbir until every bone settled in its place. Then he recited. Then he said the takbir and raised his hands until they were level with his shoulders, then he bowed and placed his palms on his knees until every bone returned to its place, without lowering his head or raising it. Then he raised his head and said: "Allah hears the one who praises Him." Then he raised his hands until they were level with his shoulders — Abu 'Asim thought he said — until every bone returned to its place, standing straight. Then he said: "Allah is greater," then he descended to the ground, keeping his arms away from his sides, then he prostrated. Then he raised his head, bent his left leg and sat on it, and spread the toes of his feet when he prostrated. Then he returned and prostrated again. Then he raised his head and said: "Allah is greater," bent his left leg and sat on it straight until every bone returned to its place. Then he stood up and did the same in the next rak'ah. When he stood up from the two prostrations, he said the takbir and raised his hands until they were level with his shoulders, as he did at the beginning of the prayer. Then he did the same for the rest of his prayer, until when it was the prostration or the sitting in which the taslim is given, he moved his left leg back and sat on his left side, leaning on it.' They said: 'You have spoken the truth. This is how the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was.'

machine translationMuḥammad b. ʿAmr b. ʿAṭāʾ did not hear this hadith from Abū Ḥumayd, nor from anyone mentioned along with Abū Ḥumayd; between them there is an unknown (majhūl) man. Muḥammad b. ʿAmr is mentioned in the hadith as having been present with Abū Qatādah, but his age does not allow for that, for Abū Qatādah was killed a long time before that, since he was killed with ʿAlī, and ʿAlī prayed over him.

machine translationHe denied that Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. ʿAṭāʾ heard this hadith from Abū Ḥumayd, and said that there was a man between them.

machine translationThe hadith is defective (maʿlūl) from another angle, namely that Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. ʿAṭāʾ did not hear this hadith from Abū Ḥumayd.

machine translationIf the opponent argues from the hadith of Abū Ḥumayd al-Sāʿidī, the answer is that Abū Dāwūd transmitted it through many routes. One of them is from Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, and it does not mention raising the hands at the bowing. The route in which that is mentioned is from ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd b. Jaʿfar, and he is weak (ḍaʿīf).
in مسند الدارمي, p. 1392 - Ibn Ḥazm
machine translationPerhaps ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd b. Jaʿfar made an error (wahm) in it.
in مسند الدارمي, p. 1392 - M. ibn Ḥibbān al-Bustī
machine translationMuḥammad b. ʿAmr b. ʿAṭāʾ heard this report from Abū Ḥumayd, and he also heard it from ʿAbbās b. Sahl from his father. He said: So both routes are preserved (maḥfūẓ), and their texts differ. Someone who is not well versed in the craft of hadith may imagine that the report of Abū Ḥumayd is defective, but that is not the case.
in مسند الدارمي, p. 1392 - Taḥāwī
machine translationThis Muḥammad did not meet Abū Qatādah, according to the sound view.
