✧ From al-Qāsim. Abū Bakr said: This wording "whenever you sleep and whenever you rise" is of the kind that I have indicated, namely that the Arabs apply the word "sleeper" to one who is lying down, and they also apply it to the sleeper whose mind has gone. The Prophet ﷺ only added in this report: "Recite them when you sleep," meaning when you lie down, since it is impossible for the sleeper whose mind has gone to be addressed and told, "When you sleep—and your mind has gone—recite the Muʿawwidhatayn." Likewise the report of Ibn Buraydah, from ʿImrān b. Ḥuṣayn: "The prayer of the sleeper is half of the prayer of the one sitting." By "sleeper" in this place he only meant the one lying down, not the sleeper whose mind has gone, since the sleeper whose mind has gone is not addressed with prayer, nor can he pray because his mind has gone.
