Chain of narrators
  1. Aḥmad b. ʿAmr
  2. Ibn and Hb
  3. Muʿāwiyah b. Ṣāliḥ
  4. Ibn al-Ḥārith Wahū al-ʿAlāʾ
  5. al-Qāsim a freed slave of Muʿāwiyah
  6. ʿUqbah b. ʿĀmir

"I was leading the Messenger of Allah [SAW] (on his mount) on a journey, and the Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: 'O 'Uqbah, shall I not teach you the best two Surahs that can be recited?' And he taught me: 'Say: I seek refuge with (Allah) the Lord of the daybreak.' And 'Say: I seek refuge with (Allah) the Lord of mankind...' He thought that I did not seem too overjoyed with them, so when he stopped to pray Subh, he recited them when he led the people in the Subh prayer. When the Messenger of Allah [SAW] finished praying, he turned to me and said: 'O 'Uqbah, what do you think?'"

  • Abū Ḥatim al-Rāzī

machine translationBoth hadiths were held by Muʿāwiyah b. Ṣāliḥ, and al-Thawrī was a memorizer. It was easier for al-Thawrī to memorize this one than the hadith of al-ʿAlāʾ, so he memorized this one and did not memorize that one. Among what indicates that this hadith is sound (ṣaḥīḥ) is that the people of Homs narrate it from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Jubayr from ʿUqbah, and it is impossible that he confused this chain with another chain. People mostly err when it is a single hadith, moving from the name of one shaykh to another shaykh. As for the like of these, I do not think it would have escaped al-Thawrī.

machine translationThis is not from the hadith of Muʿāwiyah from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān. Rather, Muʿāwiyah narrated this from al-ʿAlāʾ b. al-Ḥārith from al-Qāsim from ʿUqbah.

machine translationIn my view both of these narrations are sound (ṣaḥīḥ); both have an origin in Syria, from Jubayr b. Nufayr from ʿUqbah, and from al-Qāsim from ʿUqb[unclear].

machine translationThis is a mistake, that is, the narration of Sufyān al-Thawrī from Muʿāwiyah b. Ṣāliḥ from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Jubayr from ʿUqbah b. ʿĀmir. Rather it is Muʿāwiyah b. Ṣāliḥ from al-ʿAlāʾ b. al-Ḥārith from al-Qāsim b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān from Muʿāwiyah from the Prophet ﷺ.
